NON KILL MOVEMENT
COMPULSORY DESEXING
COMPANION ANIMALS ACT
This is the only method that has shown a proven result in reducing animals killed in pound and shelters. To achieve No-Kill you must prevent the unwanted breeding. This has to mean subsidised desexing which is now widespread in the USA. Heavy legislation regarding pet ownership has failed world wide. Let us follow the only method that has reduced the numbers of unwanted animals ending up in pounds and shelters. Once the overwhelming number of animals received by shelter and pounds is reduced they will then be able to see and comprehend the complete belief in rehoming all animals held in shelter and pounds, as now happens in many states in the USA and UK. We must have low cost/free desexing schemes initiated by government and the large wealthy organizations to stop the unwanted animals problem. Please write and ask the these large groups to spend their wealth on low cost desexing instead of killing in large shelters. Ask them why they are not prepared to follow the overseas successes.
Compulsory desexing will only work if attached to a low/free cost programme. Even so we should have a law that states nobody can breed unless registered as a breeder. This would stop many back yard breeders. These people are ignorant of the problem they create. It is often seen as a way to make extra income at home. This often goes horribly wrong if there are complications in the pregnancy or birth requiring expensive veterinarian treatment . Also if the animal is mated with an unplanned partner which is very common, they call us to get 'rid of the litter'. No decent breeder would have these accidents.
Has totally failed to help any animal. Only good pet owners have complied costing them an extra approx $30.00 to comply. These pet owners do not create the problems of wandering animals, or dangerous animals. More animals have been surrendered or left unclaimed in pounds because of this expensive legislation. You can't come down heavy like this on a community that has been allowed to get away with no enforcement of the Dog Act prior, that required dogs be registered, but was never enforced it. Very few people were aware of the new legislation. Consequently people have panicked and abandoned their pets. We must follow the USA pattern which makes all efforts to keep the pet in the home if it is a caring home. Lets help people with their pet problems not force them to hand them in to a shelter or pound where they will be killed.
