Varsity Soccer 4 and 1!

The Kalamazoo Home School Sports boys' varsity soccer team has improved its record to 4 and 1 after a three to two win over arch rival Holland, in the city of the Dutch. The team was sparked by two first half goals, courtesy of senior captain and right forward Andy Cudney.

The goals, which were almost identical, came just five minutes apart midway through the second half, after sophomore captain and right midfielder Alex Haltom sent two passes down the sideline which Cudney was able to convert.

Kalamazoo's third goal came 15 minutes into the second half on a beautiful header by star sophomore Tim Stegink off of a corner kick by junior John Ogema. The ball caromed off Stegink's head and just past the outstretched fingertips of the Holland goalkeeper.

The Lions however, made it interesting at the end, scoring two goals in the last twenty minutes on junior Ryan Buurstra who otherwise had an excellent game in goal. Kalamazoo also appeared to have scored a fourth goal after a melee in front of the Holland net, but it was called off due to a phantom handball which was preceded by questionable reffing throughout the game.

Josh Vanderhill also turned in a superb individual performance for Kalamazoo by marshalling the defense throughout the game from his central defense position.

Riding at Pine Meadows
by Hassan Fadel

I have been riding at Pine Meadow Farms since I was 4 1/2 yrs. old. Beth has always been my teacher and has been the reason for my love of horses. Riding horses is only part of what I learn. I have also learned a lot about caring for horses and have been able to experience many events both happy and sad that have given a lot of knowledge about how to care for horses. Beth is good about sharing what happens at her barn with her students. I also get to help at the barn with feeding grooming and other barn chores. When they get hay sometimes I help put it away. Beth always has vets, dentist, chiropractors and ferriers there and lets me watch as much as I want. She has a vet named Stephanie that is very nice and this year I even got to watch and help her. I sometimes take lessons from Bernadette who teaches dressage. I just started this and it is good for me and my horse. Just about anything you want to learn about horses, they have someone there to teach.

Quite a few kids from our homeschool group are taking lessons now and we get to ride together in a group when we want to. If anyone would like to come at see the barn, I would be happy to show you around and you can see my horses that I have there. My horses are Sky and Ship.
