Interview with a Teenage Dog Handler
by Jared Carlson

I recently interviewed Jack Carlson, the not even remotely famous dog handler. He shows his dog, Metler, a Cardigan Welsh Corgi, at different dog shows.

Jared: Most people have never heard of Cardigans. How did you find out about the breed?

Jack: My mom had a friend who went to England for the Crufts Dog Show. She brought back pictures, and I thought the Cardigans were cute!

Jared: When did you decide to start entering him in dog shows?

Jack: I decided to start showing him last summer, when he was about a year old.

Jared: How did you learn how to handle him in dog shows?

Jack: I took him to conformation classes at the Kalamazoo Kennel Club and that's where I learned to handle him.

Jared: How many shows have you attended?

Jack: We've been to about twelve shows.

Jared: How many awards has your dog won?

Jack: He has won about half the time. He has won Best of Breed twice. I took first place in junior handler with him three times.

Jared: What are some to the places you have gone for the dog shows?

Jack: We've been to Terre Haute and Auburn and Crown Point in Indiana. In Michigan, we have been to Berrien Springs, Kalamazoo, and Detroit. We went to St. Louis, Missouri, and to a show in Santa Rosa, California, when I was visiting my Grandmother there.

Jared: What advice would you give someone who is interested in showing a dog?

Jack: Don't get a Golden Retriever because there's too much competition in that breed.

Jared: What do you like best about going to dog shows?

Jack: I like meeting and talking to the other corgi owners.

As you can see from this interview, Jack Carlson is an excellent person to talk to about corgis. He is also very knowledgeable about other breeds, and even I learned some things from him. I hope you enjoyed reading this interview as much as I enjoyed asking the questions and getting the answers.
