Terrorism

TWA Flight 847 Hijacking

June 14, 1985

The TransWorld Airlines flight was hijacked while en route from Athens to Rome.  The hijacking culminated in the murder of U.S. Navy diver Robert Stethem, who was shot in the back of the head and his body was dumped from the plane onto the tarmac.

The terrorist plot was masterminded by Mohammad Ali Hamadei, who was later arrested in Frankfurt, Germany and is serving a life sentence.

The U.S. Navy named one of it's Arleigh-Burke Class destroyers in honor of Stetham. (U.S.S. STETHEM, DDG-63)
