Terrorism

Beruit U.S. Marines Compound  Bombing

October 23, 1983

A 12,000 pound truck bomb slammed into the barracks of the 8th Marines Regimental Battalion Landing Team in Beruit, Lebanon, in the early morning hours, killing 241 Marines and other servicemen.

Meanwhile, a smaller truckbomb hit the French military compound a few miles away, killing 58 French troops.  Both nations' forces were in Lebanon as part of a multinational peace-keeping force to quell the violence between the Lebanese Army and Syrian-backed Islamic militants.

Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility for both attacks.
