Terrorism

Beruit U.S. Embassy Bombing

April 18, 1983

Seventeen Americans and 46 Lebanese are killed when a truck laden with 2000 pounds of explosives was crashed into the lobby of the U.S. Embassy in Beruit, Lebanon.  Among the dead were the CIA's Middle East director, a Marine guard, a jornalist, and several State department employees.
Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility for the attack, which was carried out by a suicide bomber reportedly using a truck stolen from the embassy months earlier.
