Mastic Scum Interview

1. hows MASTIC SCUM now from the start you formed up to present?
Mastic Scum is since 1992 on the run .We are a four man combo guitar-Harry, drums-Man, Bass Steff and Vox-Will. As we started in the early 90's we we're definitely influenced by deathmetal. Later on it changed into grindcore noise stuff and now I think you can discribe the sound as grind/metall!
We always felt like the underdog, and we still to do this way. Not much has changed not much has changed at all. Musick is still therapy for us. We like to think we're survivors. What doesn't kill us make us stronger. There's always been a feeling of being against, and being the underdog - that's how we like it. We are a real band and we've made very real records. We just keep playing and we don't set goals.

2. i've seen that you have your new (2nd) album entitled Scar at Cudgel Agency, could you tell us more about it and when definitely the release of this album.
The 9 th of december 2002 our actual album SCAR was out at "Cudgel Agency". On the Album SCAR you can find 12 catchy songs well doesed between grinding, groovy parts and breaks, crusty punch, kickass fluid blast attacks and of course with a powerfull sound. Yes, and for sure the typicall MS mind damaging mashing Vocals as well. We are very satisfied with this release. This album mirror the progression of the band of the last years. We tried to create an album, carrying forward the work on our debut album "zero". We spent a lot of time to do this album, not just to create songs and writing lyrics, also for studio work, artwork, etc. Our fans ingest this album also with pleasure and we got great reactions from magazines with reviews.

3. mostly when you are writing/composing a songs most especially on this 2nd album what is more important to you or to the band. The lyrics or the music and what topics mostly MASTIC SCUM writes.
Actually there is first the sound and then we are writing the lyrics to the songs, cause it works well. Everything is important, the lyrics as well as the sound for sure. Definitely the lyrics for me as a singer are very important cause I'm the piece of shit who have to sing it and I have to communicate with my own personality if it's right or wrong for me myself and I. A lot a social criticism, political stuff, society overdose talk. Some personal perverse macabre sex stuff and other interesting reality things written in a MS style.

4. we all know that this kind of band GRINDCORE/NOISE/DEATH/etc... music is the basis to identify (of course) what band you are and also to tell that you're not telling a lie if you say grindcore. But do you think that good lyrics or sometimes politicaly aware topic is in need when you make a songs. Or do you prefer to just some rifs and ala drums machine beats like some other grind band that just sing blah, blah, blah...awooo....ahhh!!!!! etc...
We identify us as a band who is 10 years on the run. Still the same line up! Good friendship. Mastic Scum sound is a lot a groove and also blastbeat stuff - nothing like machine beats or blah blah blah. Alright !!!

5. I've read that you signed to this label Cudgel for your 2nd album. what do you mean about signing? is it with a condition, or do you paid for this? Or a complimentary copy is enough for all of you?
To sign does mean there's a contract! Cudgel Agency send us to a studio for 2 weeks. They booked a Tour for 3 weeks in march 2003, also a lot a publicity stuff and so on. Label work!! We are very satisfied with the cooperation with "Cudgel Agency", great support!!
By the way what the hell do you mean with a complimentary copy. ?
5.1. what i mean about complimentary copy is a free copy after the records released. You know that instead of paying you for the record or bringing you the studio. They just give you 10% or much more of the released copy.
We got a budget for studio and also CD for our own merchandise shop. I cant say more about this, there is a professional discretion about our contract with the label.

6. how's the gig at Global Village Festival happened last sep. 14, 2002. Is this a benefit gig or just feast that only celebrate.
The "Global Village Festival" was important for us as a band with an potical background. It was a benefit festival, every Band played for free. The Salzburg Social Forum was the Organizer for this kind of demonstration against the WEF.World Economic Forum.Globalisation and so on you know.Fight against these corrupt Bank Mangements!!

7. do you have any bad experience from your past gig played that do you think you wont forget about. could you tell us about this?
Actually nothing cause I don't care about good or bad experience but there was a gig 96 in Istanbul. The Owner of the Club''Saturn Bar'' heard definitely never a Band like Mastic Scum before and stopped the gig after 10 min. without no statemant. Maybe a enemy of our musicbuisness?

8. by the way, what condition do you ask if there is an organizers asking you to play to their gig or club.
When, where, why! Beer and water! Vegetarien food! Sleeping places ! Fix money for the gig or maybe a 60-40% deal with the entrance. Merchandise selling, technical-rider and so on. But actually our managemant check it out.
8.1. what do you mean about "our management check it out", do you have any manager or who in the band in charged to do/handle this work?
Our latest release, the CD "scar" is promoted by "Resonance Promotion". This company is doing promotion for us and is also checking shows for Mastic Scum.

9. do you been tour already in other country. mostly where? and what band you played with already outside the country (i mean foreign band)? At our last Tour in march 03 we 've played in Germoney, Tschech Republic, Slovakia, Austria, France, Belgium and the Netherlands. We 've been on tour with Master (U.S), Lividity (U.S) and Damnable(P.L). Last April a cool gig with Cannibal Corpse, Sinister and Myrskog and so on. A lot of festivals this summer with bands like Napalm Death, Dismember, Destruction, In Flames and the next big fuck is that we'll play as solo support in okt.03 for Motrhead.
9.1. do you said that you are schedule to play solo support (no other band than MS) on Oct.03 for Motorhead. Is this a band decision or just only anyone contact you to play on. Are you a fan of Motorhead?
Its the decision of the Motrhead Management of course. And by the way, YES we love Motrhead!!

10. do have any plan to play here in southeast asia (like in the Philippines). Or you have been play already like in Japan.
No, we never played in Southeast Asia, we've been there just as tourists. We hope it's possible next year cause we're on Tour in U.S and why not to jump over to Southeast Asia! I'm sure it must be great to play there some awesome shows.
br> 11. what can you say about the threat or america to iraq that they will declare war against iraq if they don't surrender their nuclear bombs or a mass desruction weapons.
I think there must be a way against war. We can all live together! But the new society runs more like the rich goes richer and the rest go to hell. For sure Sadamm Husein is a Dictator but there more as 15 Dictators actually around the world and no one cares. U.S is looking for oil and Bush must help his Weapon Loby cause these guys helped him a lot to be the insanity President of the U.S.! But I met a lot a nice persons in the States 2 years ago you know.

12. by the way, what keep all of you busy besides the band? Any other band or work?
There are no side projects these days. I work sometimes as Dj Mastic Will and I try to organize events in all kind. The other guys working as I also in different day jobs but the most power runs for sure into MS. There is too less time to do side projects.

13. Well, i think that's for all now. Any last words or maybe next time more questions to come if it's ok to all of you.
Thank's a fuckin bunch for your interest in MS and don't believe the hype.
Today we stop to get back in evolution - the time is right to start a revolution!
Cheers Will.
