As Lady Paris sailed down I-75, within her golden throne within her
silver chariot, Sir Divot groveled at her feet and Lady Kate watched in bewilderment,
as she had never seen him behave thus. What had become of the callous brute
she had grown up with? He was groveling, but simultaneously grumbling displeasure.
Did this forebode of bad times to come? She was worried, as was her nature. All, eventually, fell very, very silent as they sped south, nimbly avoiding the confusion caused by an earlier bomb explosion in the Kingdom of Detroit. Lady Paris began wistfully humming Stop In The Name Of Love as they raced through Motown, but the silver chariot roared on, this princess had a destiny to fulfill. And suemom politely requested she cease humming, lest she draw the attention of Michiganers to an Ohio chariot in their midst. On and on they sped, eventually entering the Country of Ohio where people speak with a slight southern accent, according to the people of Michigan. And as they crossed the line, Lady Paris turned back with tears in her eyes, wondering if she would ever see her homeland, and her beloved son, Rumor Roo Roo again. Only time would tell. But now they were traveling in fateful waters in a country known as The Home of the Buckeyes. And to disguise Lady Paris's country of origin, suemom, placed on OSU bandana about her neck and instructed her to start speaking with a slight southern accent. Lady Paris knew she could handle that as her first Lady in Waiting was from the real south and they had often practiced the dialect together. And "y'all" did, after all, sound so much better than youse guys. All remained quiet. Then Lady Paris realized that her chariot driver, russdad, had not eaten since breakfast. If they were to make it to the Kingdom of Dayton, to the Tudor Castle of Sovereign Court, he would need to eat - after all, despite his pleasant nature, he was only human and could not, as she, get by on only 2/3 cup of kibble a day. So she gave the humans entrusted with her care permission to stop in the Kingdom of Toledo at a place with golden arches while she remained secreted behind the dark windows of her chariot. And that is when Sir Divot made his move. While remaining prostate on the floor beneath Lady Paris's golden throne, Sir Divot began to complain, "So you think you are royalty, huh? Better than us because you come from Kallista! Well, we'll show you how the other half lives! No more pedicures every week. No more fancy shows. No more fraternizing with the beautiful corgwyn. You are with us now and we'll show you how the other half lives! And I just might steal that beautiful necklace you've got wrapped around your lovely neck." And on and on he grumbled, while Lady Kate frantically stood at the window calling for the humans to return before things went too far. But Lady Paris never said a word - she would not stoop to acknowledge his challenge to her throne. And, yet, throughout the entire one-sided confrontation, Sir Divot never moved from his position at her tiny feet. . Lady Paris's escorts soon returned, quickly silencing the commotion and putting Sir Divot in his place. And after a few more grumbles, all was quiet as they continued south. So quiet that Suemom nodded off to sleep knowing that Russdad was a safe driver who would safely guide the silver chariot to it's stable. He so loved his chariot. Upon arrival at Sovereign Court, Lady Paris stood up to assess her surroundings and she wiggled with glee - happy to be free from the golden throne within the silver chariot. Out in the courtyard she nose-dived and wiggled, rolling on her back . oh, it was good to be free, and the green grass beneath her feet felt so terribly good. The stress of the trip obviously caused her to lose her composure. The transformation had begun. Once inside the Tudor Castle she observed Lady Kate and Sir Divot frantically gnawing on American Rawhide, and Lady Paris's second lady in waiting presented her with the largest pig ear she had ever seen - a gift sent along by her first lady in waiting, Milliemom. And that is when Sir Divot made his move again, growling his anger and circling Lady Paris who guarded this dear gift from a beloved Milliemom with unladylike lip curls. Heavens, what type of castle had she come to! And then she suddenly spied, of all things, CATS! Oh, dear, she had sunk to a new low - CATS WITHIN A CASTLE! Losing her composure, she hounded after Sir Mitts and his Page Boogie, chasing them from her presence and leaving them both wide-eyed and bushy-tailed beneath their mistress's bed. But then she came across ol' Mistress Kitty, a four pound, elderly lady of 13 years who did not flee - what was this, thought Lady Paris, and she sniffed about. Yep, it certainly was a cat, but why didn't it run? "I'm too old to run," purred Mistress Kitty. "So do what you will, I have survived worse." Lady Paris suddenly felt ashamed and quickly regained her composure. This was certainly a different cat. Tiny, small, old, and unafraid. "Tell me, Mistress Kitty, what terribly things have you experienced?" "Well, when I was a little kitten, just starting to walk, some people said that I was 'just a cat' and they left me alone, without food, in a chariot parking lot in the hot sun. I was so starved, I couldn't see the end of my nose. And these little boys came along, and because I was so sick they wouldn't pick me up and cuddle me - they just kept poking me with sticks. Of course, that made me scream, as I was just a baby. And that's when Suemom heard me from across the parking lot and followed her ears. Why, she just scooped me up and put me in her chariot and brought me here. She thought I'd be dead by morning, but she fed me with an eyedropper this wonderful brew of milk, egg yolk and Karo syrup. And as you can see, I survived. That's my theme song . I Will Survive . and that includes YOU!" "And the others?" quizzed Paris, understanding Mistress Kitty's ire. "Well, Sir Mitts she found along a country road, along with his sister, Mitsy, who is at the bridge now. And Page Boogie showed up as a puffball of a kitten at her bird feeders . He has adored Sir Mitts ever since he saw him in the back courtyard. He didn't trust Suemom at first, and it took her 3 weeks to win his confidence with the help of Sir Mitts. Now Boogie boy crawls up into bed with Suemom every night to snuggle next to her like a dog. Can you believe it? A cat acting like a dog! Oh! Excuse me, I forgot myself." "That's okay," said Lady Paris. "And what about Lady Kate and Divot?" "Well, Lady Kate came from the, er, wrong side of the tracks, her grandfather is of royal blood, but . Well, he had a wayward son. And let's not talk of that. It's not very nice. As for Divot. Oh, that boy had a fitful start. His keepers were afraid of him, so every time he wanted to play, they either locked him in his room or they took him to the animal hospital for the evening . Locked him up in the psycho ward. So he has some rough edges." That explains a lot, Lady Paris thought to herself. The brute wasn't properly raised, hugged and cuddled and disciplined. He had grown into his teens as a wild child. So how could she expect more of him. "You see, Lady Paris, not all of us get the start in life you received. And there are lots of us out there. Here in Tudor Castle, we are the lucky ones. But there are others who are not so lucky. They're locked up in prisons, and if no one bails them out in a certain amount of time, they are PTS." "PTS?" "Put to sleep . for good. Sent to the Rainbow Bridge immediately," mewed Miss Kitty. "Oh dear, that is terrible," sighed Paris. "Yes it is, but there are these wonderful people called Rescuers, and they spend their hours, late into the evening, searching for the lost souls in these prisons, hoping to get to them before it's too late. They do what they can, but they can't save them all. It's such a tragedy. Well, I'm tired now, I'm gonna go sit in the window and watch the sun set." Lady Paris knew about the Rainbow Bridge, and she knew her first lady in waiting, was somehow actively involved with these Rescue people, but she had never been told what went on. Perhaps milliemom was trying to shield her from life's horrors. And that night Lady Paris got little sleep. She was thinking of how she might help. A she resolved to be more understanding of Divot's brutish ways. Besides, he was kind of cute. But she had heard that he was betrothed to a Lady Classy. The next day was beautiful. Russdad let Lady Kate and Sir Divot out first, while Lady Paris and Suemom slept in. And when Suemom arose, she took Lady Paris out so she could do her business and then brought her back into the castle and gave her 2/3 cub of royal kibble. "Hah!" laughed Divot. "We got an entire cup, and we'll get another cup this evening! And I hear you are only getting 2/3 cup a day! Hah, hah, hah, hah, heh!" Oh, Lady Paris was embarrassed. He obviously knew that she had been placed on a diet because of her expanding girth. It's so hard when you are tiny to keep your weight under control. And she snarled at him and finished her kibble. As the week went by Lady Paris settled into her new castle, but she somehow sensed that this was not her finally stop, and there was an uneasiness about her. She continued to ruminate of those less fortunate that she. And she even became friends with Lady Katie and Sir Divot, taking walks with them every evening - she and Sir Divot quite the pair as they always led the way, while Lady Kate trailed behind to make sure she lost sight of no one. She was such a worrier. And then the morning came when her escorts bundled her up and placed her into the silver chariot along with Lady Kate and Sir Divot, but her golden throne was left behind. She had obviously become one of them. And she grinned as she had come to associate chariot rides with park walks with her new friends. But what was this? They weren't heading north to the park, but south! What new adventure was in store? Forty-five minutes on the road, and they pulled over at an oasis. Busy it was with several chariots, some small, and some very, very large. Suemom explained that they were called trucks, and that a large one known as Snow White, handled by Sir Brucedad would be arriving soon to take her to her next point of destination. Paris grew sad. She had come to love her Tudor Castle on Sovereign Court and worried that she might not ever see it again. But Suemom told her she had a royal destiny to fulfill that would benefit all corgwyn and corgwyn-of-mix that weren't as fortunate as she. And Paris looked down at the OSU bandana about her neck and smiled. Yes, she did have a destiny. And then Sir Brucedad arrived. Oh, he was a handsome devil. Salt and pepper hair and green eyes with beautiful black lashes. She thought they would make quite the pair walking down the street together. And with anticipation, yet sadness, she said goodbye to the household of Sovereign Court and climbed into that big white steed known as Snow White. |
