I hate the food that we had to eat during the cruise. It is not like I hate Japanese food. It is more like the Hakuho-Maru chefs don't know how to cook food.

Breakfast is either Japanese style fish, miso soup and the evil natto (fermented beans) or the Western style bread with either strawberry or blueberry jams and a cup of instant coffee. Lunch (e.g. middle photo) is a heapful of rice with this awful green salad/steak or fried food/fruit combo. If not for the fruit, you would not see me lining up for my lunch. Dinner is the most palatable course and is always Japanese style.

To survive a cruise aboard the Hakuho-Maru, be sure to bring your own brand of food. I just have to stock on junk food like potato chips, crackers, cup noodles, and pretzels. It also helped that somebody brought her breadmaker, with which we made the most delicious bread to munch on at midnight, when hunger pangs are most felt.
