Emily came into the guest bedroom, immediately rushing to her friend's side. Helena was shaking, the phone clenched in her hand so tightly the plastic casing squeaked. Emily slowly took the phone and placed it on its hook.
"Mr. Chase..." Helena forced out. Her throat felt like it was closing up.
"I know," Emily wrapped her arms around her. "I picked up the phone as it rang. I heard Brad."
Helena's wide and glazed-over eyes stared into Emily's. Dark circles were like bruises underneath them.
"What did Brad mean, Helena, when he asked what you had done?"
Helena shook her head. "I don't know! Mr. Chase was like a father to me, I just got here..." Her breath shuddered as she sucked it in. "I would never have hurt him!"
Emily caught Helena as she slumped over, nearly tumbling off of the bed, her body shaking with each tremendous sob. The two women sat there holding each other for a long time before there was a knock on the front door, making them jump.
"I'll get that," Emily said as she stood up. "You just stay here and rest. Try to calm yourself."
A few minutes later, Helena was greeted by an older man stepping into her bedroom.
"Ms. Silverman," he nodded as he flashed a badge. "I'm Detective Waters. May I talk to you about Frank Chase?"
Helena nodded as she saw Emily following the detective. He sat on the stool beside the vanity, dwarfing it with his size. It groaned under his weight. Emily sat next to Helena on the bed.
"Ms. Silverman," Detective Waters started. "I understand that you knew the chase family very well, that you grew up with Frank Chase's son, Brad."
Helena nodded. "He called me not very long ago. He told me what happened."
"Yes," the detective said. "He was quite the mess when we reached the scene, understandably. On the brink of a nervous breakdown, the paramedics had to sedate him."
Emily shook her head, tears falling down her pale cheeks. "Poor Brad. Poor Mr. Chase..."
"Who could have done this?" Helena asked through the lump in her throat.
"Well, that's why I'm here, Ms. Silverman. Brad said something about you being back in town after a long time away. Is this true?" Detective Waters took out a notebook and a pen.
"Yes," Helena replied.
"Why were you gone for so long?"
"My mother had passed away. I was grieving. I couldn't stay here any longer. I came back for Emily's wedding."
The detective looked up to Emily, who nodded to him in agreement to Helena's statement. He jotted something down in his notebook before speaking again. "Bradley Chase also mentioned something about you... nevermind."
Helena tilted her head. "What did he say?"
"Nothing, Ms. Silverman, that was very unprofessional of me. Probably just random rantings from his breakdown, anyway. Where were you last night?"
"She was here," Emily said. "She was here in bed, all night."
The detective looked suspiciously over to Helena, who nodded vigorously. He looked as though he could have taken out his handcuffs and arrested her right there.
"Ms. Silverman, if I were you I wouldn't leave town until this is all sorted out," he said as he stood up and slid his pen and notebook back into his coat pocket. Emily stood to walk him out.
"I'll be stopping by again soon," he said as the two of them stepped out of the bedroom to the front door.
Helena stared at the floor, watching it blur as tears filled her eyes. This couldn't be happening...
