| Helena suppressed a grin as Emily chatted up a storm, fixing Devin's hair or his tie whenever she could. Man, she thought. This whole bride thing is making quite the perfectionist out of Emily.
"I was thinking about lillies for my bouquet and the centerpieces on each table, but we're on a tight budget and the florist is being ridiculous with the prices..." Devin stared at his fiance, smiling and nodding with everything she said but obviously not catching a word of it. All of this talking that Emily was doing really gave Helena a chance to look the couple over. Damn, Emily looked so happy. She just seemed to glow with pride that she was marrying such a great man. Her curly brown hair bobbed as she moved around, talking with her hands, showing how dramatic the argument between her and the church personnel had been. Her eyes, which were normally hazel, seemed to glow yellowish gold in color. She was smiling a lot more than Helena had ever seen, and Helena nearly lost her battle trying not to laugh at the thought that maybe this bride-to-be thing was going to send Emily straight to the loony bin. "What the hell are you chuckling about, Miss Thing?" Emily was now staring at Helena, her eyes looking like darts ready to pierce through Helena's forehead. "You," Helena replied, letting her laugh out. "You're just so funny." Devin began to laugh as well, his pearly whites glittering in the restaurant's lighting. Emily's glare turned to him, and he abruptly stopped. "This is supposed to be our perfect day," Emily scolded him. "It's no laughing matter." "Emily, Emily, Emily!" Helena flashed a smile to her friend and reached over the table to pat her on the arm. "This wedding is going to be one of the happiest days of your life, and the best way to make it so is for you to relax. You're running around like a chicken with its head cut off!" Emily whined, "You're the Maid of Honor, Helena. You should be helping me, you know?" "And the first thing I'm going to do as your Maid of Honor is give you some helpful advice. Relax, savor the moment, and just be happy. Don't go all Bridezilla on us, okay?" Emily let out a laugh, her shoulders seeming to relax. "You're right," she said. "I can deal with the florist later. It's my time to spend with my future husband and my best friend." "A toast," Devin held up his glass. "To a new beginning, new friends, and an amazing future together." "Cheers!" Helena and Emily laughed as all three of them clinked glasses. Helena sighed and looked to the floor for a moment. She was smiling on the outside, happy for her friend's good fortune. On the inside, though, she was killing herself. Emily, she thought to herself, looking up to flash another smile to her friend. You're going to have an amazing future, but I don't think I'll be in it. |
