| Our message of solidarity with those struggling with us against dislocation and greed: To the valiant men and women of Chechnya, Chiapas, the Sierra Tarahumara, Big Mountain, and wherever the power of money threatens the land, water, sky, and those who live in them: To the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, upon whose ancestral land this tragedy is unfolding: To the governments of the City and County of San Bernardino, State of California, and United States: To the Organisation of American States: To the United Nations: To the National and International Press: Brothers, Sisters: | |
| The wave of socioeconomic and ethnic cleansing which threatens to flood you now is at our doorstep. Who are we? Our Neighbourhood Action and Preservation Association must defend San Bernardino's oldest neighbourhood from destruction by the city! Why? "Vision 20-20", sold to the Metropolitan Water District by the "Urban Spaces Group," a water-project advocacy group from Texas (where they have already wreaked havoc on San Antonio!), is now trying to sell its project to the City of San Bernardino. This will not benefit the residents of San Bernardino, and will result in dislocation, homelessness, and the turning of the Bunker Hill Aquifer--San Bernardino's most precious resource--into another Owens Lake, Mono Lake, or Aral Sea! Why? to benefit shortsighted business interests along Hospitality Lane, and, beyond them, greedy developers, both here and in the counties thirsty for our water! We must resist this repeat of of the Spaniard and Mormon rape and pillage of this land, which has already soaked our precious soil in mud and blood! The Soviet people fell victims the folly of their government in draining the Aral Sea, which has turned into a salt-pan, poisoning the cotton-fields it was supposed to irrigate. The Egyptian people have had some of their most precious historical heritage drowned by the meglomaniac Lake Nasser, behind the Aswan High Dam, and now the Nile Delta is shrinking. This tragedy is being repeated in the Three Gorges project in China. We, too, have been foolish, in drowning the Grand Canyon of the Hetch Hetchy and draining Owens Lake. We say Enough Already! We stand against such folly here in San Bernardino, which has seen most of its historic downtown already destroyed. With you, we resist, and will not rest until we can call San Bernardino ours again! | |
