Hallo.

I'm john van der Elst and the one who started this Website. When I was looking for genealogical information on the web I noticed that the Van deer Elst family wasn't present.
So, I decided to start one. I left in 1953 for Canada and after living in Winnipeg for nine years we moved to the U.S.A.. We, which is Alice my wife myself and our two children born in Canada. We went straight to Long Beach and remained in that vicinity.

Hi I'am Walter (Wouter)
Im born in the Netherlands in the city of Eindhoven. My dad emigrated to the Netherlands in 1926. My family is mostly concentrated in the vicinity or Ninove, Geraardsbergeh and Aalst S.W. of Brussels in Belgium.
Apparently the family originated in the village of Elst located between Brussels and Bergen (Mons). However, I never was able to find it on any map. Furthermore a large part of our family appears to be living in the vicinity of Rijssel (Lille) in the northern part of France.
Another particularity is, for one reason or the other, my name is spelled with the capital's V(van) and E(Elst). My father's name is spelled V(van) D(der) E(Elst), both forms are found in the province of Flaanderen. Then again my grand father's name was spelled Vander Elst.
Frequently occurring names in my family are: Camile, Kamiel, Miel, Gaston, Edmond, Gustave, Henri, Hendrik, Henriette, Ghislain, Jeanne, John, Pierre, Paul, Francine, Francois (with C cedille), Christine, Miriam, Jacques, Jaqueline and many religius names.
My grandfather initial a socialistic catholic apostate was in the beginning of this century converted by a Dutch evangelist to a Protestant sect. Later he remarried a Dutch woman. That's why my dad left for the Netherlands in 1926....... Walter (Wouter) Van der Elst

Received from Nico van der Elst on Sat, June 5, 1999
Let me introduce myself.

My grandfather Nicolaas van der Elst born 12-06-1886 is not listed in your records. I have done some research to the genealogy of the van der Elst family.too. Possible we can exchange information to extent or correct present files. Therefore my question is, what is the source of your information. When they originated at the central archives of the Hague, they are unoriginal, according the county registrar of Dordrecht, because he has the original recordings.

I have the following genealogical information: 1. Notations from my Grandfather (Nico 1886) that go back to Abraham van der Elst. He refers to the reverent van Selms who did the research (I believe during the fifties). He writes that Abraham France was born in Laken ( A suburb of Brussels in Belgium?) In general they confer with your information. Furthermore, I did some research in Dordrecht s county archives myself. Where I found the following: The name "van der Elst" is first mentioned at the marriage of Frans van der Elst with Ida Ratinghe in 1702. Until then the family name was "Fransen". I cite now the marriage certificate of Abraham France from the microfiche:
4 Juny 1666 Abraham France (last letters hard to read) Linenworker at j.m. van Utregt, living in the Raamstraat with Lydia Jacobsd.
j.d. van Leyden lives on the Drapierskay.
Everything points toward that this is our Abraham France. The names van der Elst and Ratinge are not mentioned here. However, Ratinge is his daughter in law's name. Something wrong here?
Furthermore the identity of Jacob born 18-09-1776 and Francois Jacobus born 25-9-1781 is not clear to me.
In general:

child of Frans van der Elst called Francois Jacobus died on June 9, 1884 at age 3. Jacob Franczn marries Geertje van de Ven Jacob signs the birthcertificate of Johannes in 1813. Francois Jacobus widower of Geertje van de Ven trouwt Aaltje van den Berg Francois Jacobus died 1861 at age 80. For the moment I assume that Francois van der Elst of 1781 our forefather is. The informatie about his fathers family is not accurate either. The dates of dead dont agree. Furthermore the children of Nico van der Elst and Aart de Zeeuw are all were born/died in Dortrecht.

My Grandfather, who I have known well, told me that his brother Jan while working as security guard drowned. In the dead- certificate is stated as date January 10th, probably is that the time they found the body and the accident occurred sooner. This is it so far. Kind regards of your first cousin twice removed.
Nico van der Elst.

With regard to the information on Maria Sija van der Elst, the spelling of the name of her husband should be Nicolas Gerard van Taack Trakranen--single "a" in "Nicolas", "aa" in "van Taack", and "Trakranen" in the combined version used by our branch of the family. Also, "Nicolas" is the spelling of the name of Nicolas Gerard's father.
Sincerely yours,
William van Taack Trakranen

Thank you for your message. I'll surely look up the Van der Elst home pages. The interesting thing about our surname is the fact that it is spelled differently - especially in Flanders. Nevertheless, I suppose they are all from the same stock!
