Cavalier Weight Reduction
It is widely accepted that one of the keys to performance is a good power to weight ratio. Since the budget on this project is very tight, a sudden increase in power is not likely to happen for a while. That means these gains will have to be taken care of more from the weight side of the ratio than the power side.
This will be the most significant place for the car to gain 1/4 mile performance until i can find the rest of the parts for my junk yard turbo set up and get it installed.
The stock weight of the car with a full tank of gas and my tubby butt in it was 2660lbs according to the scales at Englishtown about 2 years ago. With a few well choosen and invisible items removed from the car, that weight should be around 2400lbs by spring. Ultimately I will need to get the car to at least 2000lbs race weight. That is the point at which I believe the car will be capable of competeing heads up against mild V8 cars and modded V6's.
The trick to getting all the weight out will be that I do not want to have anything missing or modified on the car that a person walking by would notice at a glance.
Step 1: The first step in weight reduction is going to be removing some mass from the car that no one will ever miss. I am starting with the body side moldings since they are not only ugly, they are the wide heavy plastic kind that do weigh several pounds.
The second victim of my weight reduction madness will take the use of the mighty dremel tool to complete. I will cut the center "X" bracing out of the hood and trunk lid since it serves little or no structural purpose and will not be missed.
The last to go in this round of weight reduction will be the padding and sound deadening material from under the carpet, the interior of the firewall, and behind all of the interior trim.

I expect this first round of weight reduction to net a total of around 50Lbs. out of the car. Although that is not a lot of weight, if you apply the 100lbs = 1 tenth rule of thumb, it is a half a tenth off of the cars ET without spending a dime.
Pics and Weights of the results will follow soon.
