Where was Route 8? | ||||
| Based on the information I have been able to gather,
NJ State Highway 8 was designated as such in 1916. It's initial path
took it from Verona and ended in Unionville, NY, just across the
state border. In New York, it continued on. It passed through four counties and the following towns and
cities in New Jersey:

Some of these towns have villages were settled in the late 17th and early 18th
centuries, but you can read more about that in the "Pre
- History" area. |

| At the time Route 8 was established, the population of
these towns was much smaller and the economy was still mostly agriculture based
although manufacturing and mining were also a big part of the economy.
Today, the population of these towns totals 608,038 and the biggest sector
of the economy are Service companies. Most of the towns are
"suburbs" or "bedroom" communities. |

| There are also numerous buildings, landmarks, and organizations that were in existence at the time this road designation was established. As time permits, I will include pictures (old and new) and links to the interesting and peculiar along the tour. Some of the other items to look at are the railroads and rivers that the road crossed, the schools and churches that have stood on or near the road, the political and social groups that existed at the time of the road designation as well as the people that were around. | |||||
Information on this page came from various sources including www.census.gov and web.mit.edu/spui/www/firstnj.html The 8 gif came from www.aaroads.com and the yellow old marker came from Robert Droz. I know that this 8 would not have existed as a different scheme existed when this road become Route 23 in 1928 but it's all I could find. I hope you learn something about State Route 8 history, Please email me if you have some historical information about old New Jersey State Route 8. |
