Guests/Ages/Dates
This evening is for homeschooled students and their guests from all over New Jersey as well as our neighboring states. Guests do not have to be homeschooled. Students & guests must be at least 13 years old by the date of the prom. As always, this is an open prom and dates are not required or encouraged but are allowed at the parents' discretion.

Chaperones
Any interested parent may chaperone by purchasing a ticket for him or her self. To set a good example, Chaperones should follow the same dress guidelines as the students. Students and guests will remain in the building at all times unless accompanied by a chaperone or they may be refused reentry. Other parents are welcome to come in to pick their teens up at the end of the evening.

Modesty Guidelines Updated for 2004 Please Read
As in the past, sexy revealing dresses are not welcome at our prom since they detract from the wholesome atmosphere we strive to maintain. To help avoid any misunderstandings, we have the following specific restrictions: the front of the dress should not be too low-cut or have a plunging neckline; the back of the dress should not be open below the bra-line unless it has straps or laces across the back; dresses, skirts, and slits in them should not be shorter than 4 inches above the knee; there should be no bare midriffs or other inappropriate bare sections; dresses should not be extremely tight or see-through. Strapless dresses and dresses with spaghetti straps are allowed as long as the dress is still modest in presentation. If in doubt, err on the side of modesty. If a dress you like has an opening that is cut too low, you can sew in a panel of lace, satin, silk, chiffon, or some other appropriate material, to bring the dress into compliance with these guidelines, or else choose a different dress for this prom. If you have specific questions, please call or email me to discuss them. Please Note: These dress requirements & guidelines will be enforced and you may be refused entry or sent home if you are not dressed appropriately. Many girls modify store-bought dresses or sew their own dresses adding sleeves, straps, panels, etc., to the dress or pattern. Some very good bargains in formal attire, for both boys and girls, can be found at thrift shops and consignment stores, so no one should feel pressured to spend a fortune on clothing.

The following links contain examples of some beautiful, modest prom dresses just to show that these two concepts are not mutually exclusive! We offer these for purposes of example only.

Dance
Even though we enjoy a dinner at our prom, it is mainly a dance and we encourage everyone to learn some traditional ballroom dances in addition to popular dancing. If you don't know how already, please learn some basic dance steps and practice before the prom so you feel comfortable getting out on the dance floor when the DJ plays the appropriate music. In addition to learning from people you know, there are ballroom dance studios that offer introductory lessons at discounted prices, instructional books & videos available for free at public libraries, and dance instruction can even be found on the Internet now. Immodest dancing is not acceptable and will not be allowed.

This link will take you to a site called DanceTV, where you can learn Ballroom Dance online, as well as order items for learning at home: http://www.dancetv.com/index.html

Here's a link to a list of ballroom dance Studios and Teachers in New Jersey, current as of January 08, 2004. While not complete, it may be helpful to you. The list is grouped by county and sorted by studio name. Please contact the studios/teachers for information on their programs and the webmaster if you know of additional resources they could add. http://www.usabdanj.org/njstudios.htm

Here's a link to Princeton University's Dance Etiquette Guide. Although the information at this link is meant specifically for social dances like our Homeschool Prom, some of it does not apply to our particular situation so pay attention to what seems appropriate and ignore the rest. http://www.ee.princeton.edu/~aria/etiquette.html
