MAP PLOTTING ROBOT
The aim of the robot is to plot the map of the way you are going. You  can do this in a very simple way. First you can do it without any reading. Just put optical mouse under the robot. Suppose if the robot goes an inclined plane, then it should plot height also. So first aim is to measure the speed of the robot. If you use a stepper motor, then this will be easy, only thing left is to measure angle which can be measured using a potentiometer. If you have a synchronous motor of a constant speed, then also you can measure the distance moved easily, because synchronous motor moves with constant speed. Angle measurement will remain same for all motors. Now the task is to measure the speed of DC motor. You can measure it by connecting a spike like setup to the shaft of the motor so that it will count the number of spikes on the motor shaft to measure the distance. All spikes will be equidistant. Increase the number of spikes for good accuracy. You see the setup in a wheeled mouse.
They use the same technique. Do processing with a computer.
