'Ramayana' Hindu Epic
  'Ramayana' is Hindu epic, writen in Sanskrit by Walmiki, Indian ascetic in about 300 BC.  Ramayana was spread out from India to neighbor countries, and translated into several languages.  The story had been added, modified, distorted, and become differ from the original one.

Ramayana had been brought into Thailand since Ayddhaya Era.  However, this version was not complete.  During the reign of King Rama I (early Rattankosin), Ramayana had been translated in Thai completely (1782 AD - 1832 AD).  In early Rattanakosin Era, Thai art, culture, philosophy, and literature was created, developed, and mainly influented by Buddhism and Hinduism religion.  Famous Thai painting and drawing mostly described about Buddhism, nirvana, Brahman, heaven, hell, angel, demon, and the story of Ramayana.  For example, the wall painting in 178 rooms of Wat Phra Srirattanasartsadaram (Wat Phra Kaew), the temple of the Emerald Buddha, depicted the important events in Ramayana story (1832 AD).

Ramayana narates the adventure of Rama and Sita, the royal couple in the cities of god, demon, and human.  Rama was the 7th of the ten incarnation of the Hindu god Vishnu: 1st - Matsya or the Fish incarnation, 2nd - Kurma or the Turtle incarnation, 3rd - Varaha or the Boar incarnation, 4th - Narasingha or the Lion incarnation, 5th - Vamana or the Dwarf incarnation, 6th - Parasurama, 7th - Rama, 8th - Krishna, 9th - Buddha, and 10th - Kalki.  Vishnu is the preserver and protector of creation.

Rama was the crown prince of Ayodhya who was banished from the kingdom for fourteen years because of the wish of his stepmother.  Rama and Sita went into exile with 'Lakshmana', his brother.  During the jouney in forrest, Rama's father died from the pangs of separation from his beloved son.  Bharat, Rama's another brother, who was being installed on the throne by his mother went to the forest to meet Rama and request him to come back to the city.  Rama refused to return in honor of the promise to his father.  Bharat promised to serve the kingdom as a true honest caretaker of Rama until Rama returned from the exile.

'Ravana', the invincible and powerful demon king, desired to marry Sita as he believed that her beauty would be a fitting wife for him.  Ravana made a plan to deceive and lure Rama and Lakshmana away from Sita, then, he would be able to kidnap Sita.  His plan was success, and Ravana took Sita to his kingdom of Lanka.

While Rama and Lakshmana were looking for Sita, they met and made alliance with 'Sugreeva', the monkey king who had been exiled from his kingdom by his brother 'Bali'.  Rama helped Sugreeva to regain his throne, and in return Sugreeva and his general 'Hanumana' led an army of monkeys and bears to help Rama fighting with Ravana.

With the great aid of 'Hanumana', the monkey warrior and Lakshmana, Rama rescued Sita successfully and slayed Ravana.  Rama and Sita returned to his kingdom, and finally were crowned King and Queen of Ayodhaya.
