Luigi, Mario's younger brother, first appeared in the arcade game "Mario Bros." in 1983. (For more info on this game, see my Mario page). After that, he was featured in many other Mario games, including: the Super Mario Bros., Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World and many others. The first game that Luigi starred in was the SNES (Super Ninitendo Entertainment System)game "Mario's Missing. This was Luigi's first chance to shine, as he traveled the world, while trying to free his brother from The Mario Bros. nemisis, The Evil King Bowser. Luigi didn't get another game that starred him until the release of "Luigi's Mansion" for the Nintendo Gamecube in 2002. Luigi's prpose in this game was to rescue his brother from the ghosts that had taken Mario hostage. And there you have it, a brief history of Luigi; the eternal understudy.
