The Nursing Models of Neuman, Leininger and Roy: described and
applied
What are nursing models and what is their relevance to nursing practice? These are the questions I asked myself when I decided to further my nursing education after receiving a nursing diploma 15 years prior. I was not familiar with nursing models and I felt that I delivered nursing care that was well beyond competent.
The nursing models used a different language than I was used to and I didn't find them particularly interesting. I pondered on the concepts and applied them clinically. That is when I began to see the valuable contributions of nursing models to my nursing practice.
These web pages are a collaborative effort of three practicing diploma nurses undertaking our nursing degrees. Our total years of nursing practice collectively surpasses 25 years.
Betty Neuman's Systems Model, Madeleine Leininger's Transcultural Nursing Theory and Sister Callista Roy's Adaptation Model will be described and applied. For reasons of confidentiality, the client situation is fabricated. By applying the nursing models to a client situation, we anticipate that the models will become more meaningful to you. We hope that you will think critically about the ways in which we have applied these nursing models.              -Brenda, April 2002
