CHOLESTEROL FACTS
Cholesterol is a fatty substance "found in animal fats and oils, bile, blood, brain matter, milk, egg yolk, myline sheaths of nerve fibres, liver, kidneys and adrenal glands" (Miller-Keen 1999, p.319). There are three types of cholesterol. One, is known as very low density lipoprotein (VLDL). As of this date it is not known how this lipid blood vessels. The second type is known as low-density lipoprotein (LDH), which is known in every day language as the "bad" cholesterol. This can lead to serious health problems when it outweighs the "good" cholesterol known as high density lipoprotein. Our bodies have to ballance the two perfectly to prevent us from developing illnesses such as coronary artery.

LDL clings to blood vessels and narrows arteries while HDL moves the amount excess cholesterol out of the body.

Laboratory tests can be done to determine the amount of cholesterol in the body. When the total cholesterol reaches 150mg/dl it is time to make a change in your diet in order to decrease your chance of getting coronary artery disease. When the values reach 260mg/dl doctors consider perscribing medication in order to lower the cholesterol level.
