1327AD TO 1377AD

1328AD =Henry, brother to the late Thomas, Earl of Lancaster enlarged the Savoy at the cost of 52,000 marks.

1331AD =Edward III held a Parliament at Eltham Palace.

1340AD =Edward III was at Kennington Palace, attended by his eldest son, the Black Prince, then only ten years of age.

1346AD =The Knights Hospitallers of St. John of Jerusalem had been granted the estates of the Knights Templars by the Pope. They gave the, "Buildings, Church, gardens, and all that belonged to the Templars in London", to certain students said to have removed there from Holburn, in which part of the town the Knights Templars themselves had resided before the erection of their Palace on the Thames.(curious!!)

1347AD =King Edward III in France.


1347AD =Lionel (3rd son of Edward III ) (Guardian of the Realm)kept his Christmas at Eltham Castle.

1351AD =After the decease of the Earl�s son, the first Duke of Lancaster, one of the daughters of the latter married John of Gaunt who then became the possessor of the Savoy.

1356AD =Sept. 19th, Battle of Poictiers, Agincourt.

1357AD =April 24th, The King, with his illustrous conqueror, the Black Prince, entered London, by Kent Street, Southwark, then the only public road into London from the South, with his captive, King John of France. He was recieved by Henry Picard, the Mayor, and the Aldermen, in all their formalities, with the city pageants. As was the custom, all along the route the citizens hung out all their plate, tapestry, and armour, to impress the King. The Savoy was appropriated for him.

1358AD =Chaucer�s poem, The Assembly of Fowls, or the Parliament of Birds, was written while he lived at the Savoy. He was intimate with John of Gaunt

1358AD =Dec; Somerton Castle in Lincoln was where Sir Saer de Rochford kept in safety, King John of France, and David Bruce, the Scottish King. This service cost two shillings a day. King John committed John of France to William, Baron D�Eyncourt to be taken to Somerton.

1358AD =While in London his (John�s)attendants numbered 84, but Edward ordered 42 dismissed. At Somerton he had 2 chaplains, 1 secretary,1 clerk of the chapel, 1 doctor, 1 maitre-d-Hotel, 3 pages, 4 valets, 3 wardrobe men, 3 furriers, 6 grooms, 2 cooks, 1 fruiterer, 1 spice man, 1 barber, 1 washer, some high officers and a musician.

1359AD =The marriage of John of Gaunt, to Blanche of Lancaster.

1360AD =Oct. King John of France. Negotiations for his ransom and release were finally agreed on at Calais, where the french King and his Barons on one side and king Edward and 27 of his Barons on the other swore to observe the conditions. But later John�s son, the Duke of Anjou broke parole. King John returned to England.

1362AD =Canonbury; This year has been assigned as the date of the original building, though two Arabic figures,or numerals found therein imply a much later date.

1364AD =April 9th; King John Died at the Savoy. His corpse was honorably conveyed to St. Denis, in France.

1364AD =Eltham Palace; Froissort, here a frequant guest, records how on a �Sunday afternoon in 1364, Edward and Philippa waited at the gates,to recieve the fallen Monarch;?and how, between that time and supper, in his honour were many great dances and carols, at which the young Lord de Caurcy distinguished himself by singing and dancing. Lord de Caurcy contrived to win and wed the princess Royal of England.

1364AD =During the time of Froissarts visit he mentions a secret Parliament, or rather Council, which was held at Eltham Palace.

1364AD =Erected a palace on his manor at Shene.

1365AD =Edward III gave a princely reception at Eltham Palace to King John of France,(Who had formerly been his prisoner)entertaining him with great Magnificense.(It must have been an odd ball as King John was supposed to have died in 1364AD?)

1372AD =The last Prior to come to Bermundsey Priory from the monastery of La Charite de Dieu, on the Loire river.

1375AD =At Eltham Castle, Edward III held the Parliament here (2nd time) when the lords and Commons attended with a petition, praying him to create his Grandson, Richard of Bordeaux (son of the Black Prince and heir apparent to the realm), Prince of Wales.

1375AD = Sir William Baud was allowed to enclose twenty acres of the deans land,in consideration of presenting the clergy of St. Pauls with a fat buck and doe yearly on the days of conversion and commemeration of St. Paul.

1376AD =The Savoy was pillaged by a mob, after John of Gaunt made himself unpopular after a speach to the Bishop of London in St. Pauls Church, at the citation of Wickliffe. Lord Percy, John�s friend had requested that Wickliffe might be allowed to sit; but the Bishop of London replied that he must stand up and remain uncovered, for he appeared as a criminal, and no criminal should be allowed to sit in the presence of his judges. John of Gaunt, in great anger, turned to the Bishop and exclaimed loud enough for all to hear that, "he would humble his pride, and the pride of every arrogant bishop in the Kingdom".

1376AD =The Black Prince died, Soon after his son Richard was created Prince of Wales. (How strange? Was this after he threatened the Bishops?) In this same year the citizens of London made a show or mummery,"for the disport of the young Prince", who remained at Kennington Palace with his mother, his uncle the Duke of Lancaster, the Earls of Cambridge, Hertford, Warwick, and Suffold. This show took place in the night when 130 citizens, disguiesed and well horsed in a mummery, with sound of trumpets, sackbuts, cornets, shalmes, and other minstrels, and innumerable torchlights of wax, rode from Newgate through Cheap over the Bridge, through Southwork, to Kennington.
