Galis playing for Aris in Europe
in greek competitions
Galis' and Aris' recognition came through the european games. In those games, Galis had the chance to play against the best basketball players of the time, to compare with them successfully, and to introduce basketball to all Greeks, through his team: THE LEGENDARY ARIS THESSALONIKI.
1980-1981. Aris played for the KORAC CUP. Galis is at his best, but things in Europe are not easy. In the game against Carrera Venezia, he scored 57 points, which was to be his best ever in european games. But Aris could not make it yet. The team was crushed and eliminated.
1983-1984. In that year, Aris shined for the first time in the EUROLEAGUE. It's Aris against Maccabi Tel Aviv. Aris lost in Thessaloniki 62-68, but in the second game in Tel Aviv, Galis played an impossible game and Aris won 74-75. It was a victory that gave the greek fans a small taste of what was going to happen in the future.
Galis against Mike D'Antoni, then playing for Olimpia Milano, now coach of the Phoenix Suns.
1986-1987. Aris played against the european champions, Tracer Milano, for the semis of the EUROLEAGUE. Some NBA stars such as Bob McAdoo, Mike D'Antoni and Joe Bryant (Kobe's father) played for Tracer by the time the Italians ruled the european basketball. The team's flag is legendary Dino Meneghin. Galis was unreal that night. He scored 44 points with an unbelievable field goal percentage and scoring some awesome baskets. Aris won by 31. McAdoo quoted shocked: "What Aris and Galis did today, I haven't seen even in a game against the Boston Celtics". The whole Europe was thundered, but in the second game in Milan, the refs and some other issues will bring up a 34 points loss and Aris was eliminated again.

The next three years, Galis led Aris in three consecutive EUROLEAGUE's final four. It was a magic trip for both Galis and the greek fans, that was ended in 1991, in the loss by Scavolini Pesaro, when Aris was eliminated by playing to a fourth consecutive final four. The EUROLEAGUE trophy wasn't meant to come to Thessaloniki after all.
