Quick Preview not always show the last picture

Home > Issues

This issue is about the order used to see picture in Quick Review (p.23) and Playback mode (p.65). The issue is that the order is not always the same of the order in which the pictures are taken. This happen only when new folders are created using other functionality such as Panorama assist, Ultra HS and Intvl timer shooting (mentioned at pages 118 and 119).

As example let's start with an empty memory card and reset the Sequence Number (p.136). Let's take one normal picture. It will be stored here:

100NIKON\DSCN0001.JPG

Now let's switch to Panorama assist and take another picture (only one to simplify the example, but panorama series could be any number of pictures). It will be stored in its own folder here:

101P_001\DSCN0001.JPG

On the side, note that we have to pictures with the same file name that could cause conflicts if the pictures are moved in the same folder.

Now let's take another normal picture:

100NIKON\DSCN0002.JPG

Using the Quick Review or change to Playback mode, the picture shown is

101P_001\DSCN0001.JPG

and not

100NIKON\DSCN0002.JPG

that is the last picture that we shot. This is happening because the folder of panorama has a bigger number (101) then the folder for normal picture (100).

There are workaround about this issue, but I think the system should be improved.

A possible solution is going to Display mode > Menu > Folders > Folders and select NIKON (in this example). Doing this way we force the camera to show only the pictures in the NIKON folder. The picture in the camera folder now is hidden.

Pay attention to not go in the option Setup mode > Menu Folders > Folders because even if it looks very similar to the above option, it show only the folder NIKON and selecting it will not work. It took a while to me to figure this out, see issue #4.

Suggestion: Probably the solution of this issue is a rethinking of images naming system. Images should keep the sequential number even when stored in different folders. This can have two benefits:
