Harpsichord-Reconstruction
from a Fortepiano of Gottfried
Silbermann, Freiberg 1749
Today, the Name of Gottfried
Silbermann (1683-1753) is
Connected with his Famous Organs.
In the 18th Century He was also Famous
for Making Excellent Harpsichords,
Clavichords and Fortepianos.
He Learned his Profession in the Workshop
of his Elder Brother Andreas
Silbermann (1678-1734) in Strassburg, which had his Education in
Strassburg and Paris.
In 1711 Gottfried Silbermann Started with
his Own Workshop in Freiberg near Meissen
and got the Most Successful Organmaker in
his Time.
From the Many
Instruments leaving his Workshop, only 3
Fortepianos Survived, Belonging to Friedrich
II, King of Prussia.
On the X-Ray-Foto I could see, that the
Construction of the Case of the 1749
Fortepiano is Like a Harpsichord Case and
it is Assumed, that he has put in the New
Hammer-Action into a
Harpsichord Case and has Altered only the
Wrestplank.
It is also Assumed, that he used the Same
Strings and the Same Pitch, Therefore he
did not Change the Scale.
In the Musikinstrumenten-Museum in Berlin
is a two-manual Harpsichord, dated 1776,
and the historians are Shure, that Johann
Heinrich Silbermann (1727-1799) was the
Maker.
He is a Nephew of
Gottfried Silbermann and worked in his
workshop from 1742-43.
I took This Harpsichord to Reconstruct
the 8Žand 4ŽBridges and the Wrestplank.
