Aft Mounted Balogh Batwing Sail Rig On A Feathercraft K-1 (Page 2) |
The mast partner consists of the K-1 stern deckbar/lever bar sandwiched between two Folbot "boomerangs". I bought an extra deck bar, but the modified deck bar can still be used as a lever when connecting the fore and aft frame sections |
The mast step is attached to the keel bar. Since the keel bar tends to rotate, the mast is secured with a fastpin through the Balogh mast step cup. |
The lower side of the Balogh outrigger bar needs to be at least 8 - 9" above the water line. To lift the outrigger and still connect it to the deck bar, a 9" length of 2" square aluminum tube was attached to the bottom of the outrigger. |
The square tube attaches to the upper boomerang. The outer lobes of the lower boomerang were removed to allow access to the star knobs. |
I tend to leave the frame assembled, but it can easily be disassembled for transport. |
The hardshell kayak mounting struts on the cross thwart or middle section of the outrigger attach to a frame. This prevents the outrigger from rocking up and down relative to the kayak. |
A line is laced through four grab line loops and around cleats and struts on each side of the frame to stabilize it. I haven't yet installed D-ring patches to the hull which will be used instead of the grab line loops. |
The frame presses down on the gunwale stringers and crossrib # 4 when the square tube is attached to the boomerang. Foam pads (not shown) have been added to the undersides of the wood pieces. |
Black D-ring patches were ordered from: Long Haul Products 1685-2075 Drive Cedaredge, CO 81413 USA Phone: 970-856-3662 Fax: 970-856-3663 |
Holes for the mast and two screws were made in the hatch cover. Another, intact hatch cover was purchased to use when paddling only. |
