Formed in Rodeo, California as the seminal punk
band, riding on the heels of Nirvana and The Ramones, Green Day, originally
known as Sweet Children, grew an ever popular following in the small ventures
and filthy nightclubs, re-living the early days of The Ramones.
But as fate would have it, it was in 1989 that they obtained some money
to record the EP, 1,000 Hours on a locally based record label. Its local
success sparked the interest of independent label, Lookout. Green Day was
advanced a small amount to come up with their 1989 debut, 39 Smooth, without
original drummer Al Sobrante. He was replaced shortly by local favorite
John Kiftmeyer but soon replaced by long standing drummer Tre.
By 1992 the band would release their breaking album, Kerplunk, giving
them the options to do bigger ventues and receiving more money for
recording time. The result of all that would be the long-lasting breakthrough
1994
release, Dookie. With the FM Rock favorites, "Basket Case" and "Longview",
the band would soon be heading out to sold-out arena dates, opening
for major acts and even headlining a small tour of the U.S. So here's
the
problems begin. Former dedicated fans who relished in the punk power
glory of Green
Day were treated a major letdown with the release of Dookie. They felt
their three chord fast-timing songs were being sugar coated therefore
leading to their violent outrage towards the band.
Regardless they continue releasing
radio / video favorite, 1995's Insomniac. The fans out lashing
would lead up to the 1997 classic release, Nimrod
and it's classic ballad, "Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)" -
a homage to the former fans who turned on them - adding insult to
injury to those fans. Not only was the single a middle finger salute
to them
but it also captured the rock world's attention, making the single
a #1 radio
hit and overplayed video.
The release of "Good Riddance" made it possible for a sarcastic
greatest hits collection in 2001 called International Superhits,
complete with a retro cover and classic line-up of 'hits'. That would
then spark
the release of the 2002 release Shenanigans, a collection of rare
b-sides and covers previously not available.
And if those former fans don't like it, well the band is sure to miss you,
but the money and fame is outstanding and Green Day have made themselves
a staple in rock history just for their persistence and seeming careless
attitude to anyone other than their supportive fans. -John Michaelson
"Green
day is like sex, when were good, were really good, when were bad . .
. were still pretty damn good."
-Mike
"A guy walks up to me and asks 'What's
Punk?'. So I kick over a garbage can and say 'That's punk!'. So he
kicks over the garbage can and says 'That's Punk?', and I say 'No
that's trendy!'
-Billie Joe
"We put the fun back in dysfunctional." -Billie

"Are you canadian? Oh, okay, 'cause
you're sure as hell acting like one right now."-Billie Joe
There's nothing wrong with being a loser,
it just depends on how good you are at it. -Billie
School is practice for the future and
practice makes perfect and no one is perfect so why bother?-Green

Another turning point
A fork stuck in the road
Time grabs you by the wrist
Directs you where to go
So make the best of this test
And don't ask why
It's not a question
But a lesson learned in time
It's something unpredictable
But in the end is right
I hope you had the time of your life
So take the photographs
And still frames in your mind
Hang it on a shelf of
Good health and good time
Tattoos of memories
And dead skin on trial
For what it's worth
It was worth all the while
It's something unpredictable
But in the end is right
I hope you had the time of your life
It's something unpredictable
But in the end is right
I hope you had the time of your life
It's something unpredictable
But in the end is right
I hope you had the time of your life
Do you have the time to listen to me whine
About NOTHING and everything all at once
I am one of those
Melodramatic fools
Neurotic to the bone
No doubt about it
Sometimes I give myself the CREEPS
Sometimes my mind plays tricks on me
It all keeps adding up
I think I'm CRACKING UP
Am I just PARANOID?
Am I just STONED
I went to a shrink
To analyze my dreams
SHE says it's lack of sex that's bringing me down
I went to a whore
HE said my life's a bore
So quit my whining cause it's bringing HER down
Sometimes I give myself the CREEPS
Sometimes my mind plays tricks on me
It all keeps adding up
I think I'm CRACKING UP
Am I just PARANOID?
Grasping to CONTROL
So I BETTER hold on
Sometimes I give myself the CREEPS
Sometimes my mind plays tricks on me
It all keeps adding up
I think I'm CRACKING UP
Am I just PARANOID?
Am I just STONED
Seventeen and strung out on confusion
Trapped inside a roll of disillusion
I found out what it takes to be a man
Mom and Dad will never understand
Secrets collecting dust but never forget
SKELETONS come to LIFE in my closet
I found out what it takes to be a man
Mom and Dad will never understand
WHAT'S HAPPENING TO ME
Seventeen and COMING CLEAN for the first time
I finally figured out myself for the first time
I found out what it takes to be a man
Mom and Dad will never understand
WHAT'S HAPPENING TO ME
