Guidelines |
NIFTY FIFTY 22 GUIDELINES All participants must abide by the exact guidelines so all blocks will arrive on time and will be compatible in color scheme and size. Please keep in mind this is a large commitment and the cost of fabric for 50 9" blocks usually is between $40.00 to $70.00. ALL deadline dates must be kept in order to prevent anxious or disappointed quilters! Also, please understand the commitment you are making when signing up for your state's block. If you cannot complete your blocks within our deadline dates, we will have "holes" in our quilts. We will be sending out updates on everyone's progress to our yahoo! list. We will also keep a detailed account of everyone's progress in our yahoo! database file. All participants have access to this file. So if you are late with your blocks everyone in the exchange will be aware and not just the hostess so.......... IF YOU HAVE ANY DOUBTS PLEASE DO NOT COMMIT. 1) We will be making the blocks from the book 50 Fabulous Paper Pieced Stars by Carol Doak. Each participant is required to purchase a copy of this book and/or the optional companion CD for printing block foundations. No copies of the patterns will be provided. The finished block size for this exchange will be 9". The patterns in the book are for 12" blocks and will need to be reduced, or you can print patterns in any size using the optional companion CD. Set the pattern size, which is in one forth of the block, to 4.5 Each 4th is 4 1/2 inch finished, to print These blocks are best suited to the intermediate level foundation piecer. If you are unsure of your skills in this area, study the video CD (not the CD with the foundation patterns) which is included with the book, as it contains an excellent lesson in foundation piecing with some great tips. 2) The chosen color scheme is cool light and bright tone on tone fabrics on a black background. Cool means colors in the range from green-blue-purple-fuschia. Light and bright means no muted colors such as the grayed tones and shades. And the black background must be Pimatex black from Robert Kauffman. This is available in many fabric stores and online from many sources including Hancock's of Paducah. http://www.hancocks-paducah.com/shop-html/prods/R/RKP3.html It was selected because it is lightweight, tightly woven and will reduce bulk in the seam allowances. 3) A sample block using the actual fabrics you plan to use for the exchange (or at least very similar ones in the colors you plan to use) must be submitted within two months from when you receive your fabric swatches. Be sure you submit your sample block before you cut and sew the other 50 blocks. 4) All fabric must be 100% PREWASHED quilt shop quality cotton fabric. 5) Blocks are not to be signed. Instead, you will need to make a signature square to accompany each pieced block. These must be 2 " squares of a light fabric used in your block with your name, hometown and state written with a permanent fabric pen in small print. Make sure you stay out of the 1/4-inch seam allowance! Baste or safety pin a signature square to the corner of each of your pieced blocks. No straight pins please! 6) These foundation-pieced blocks are to be turned in with the paper foundation in place, and with the outside edges of the block trimmed leaving "seam allowance instead of the " required to sew the blocks together. The blocks can then be trimmed exactly by each participant after the paper has been removed. 7) All blocks must follow the NF Quality Check Points below. Fabrics are pre-washed and pressed. Fabrics coordinate in color. Design from the book has been followed with any required changes. Points and seams match up. Block size is 9" finished, 10" with the " seam allowance requested above, the hostess will be measuring!! Paper foundation is left on the block. Signature blocks are included and attached to each pieced block You had FUN doing it!!!!!!!! 8) If the state where you live is available, you may represent that state. If it is already taken, you may adopt another state. Once a state is assigned, it cannot be changed. Only one state per quilter unless a participant drops out. In this case an empty state may be done as a second s tate if the participant's first set of blocks are already completed. 9) There will be 50 state blocks in the exchange. The sample blocks will be used for the breast cancer charity quilt and 50 additional blocks will be sent for the exchange as described below. CONFIRMATION AND HISTORY FRMS 1) As soon the hostess receives a definite confirmation from you then she will either automatically place you on our Nifty Fifty yahoo! list or send out an invitation for you to join. All participants must be a member of their NF exchange's Yahoo! list. All updates will be placed on this list. Please fill out the History Form in the database. All participants must fill out this short History Form, which includes name, address, occupation, quilting experience, family and hobbies. Please be prompt in filling out this form because Deadline Dates DO NOT go into effect until the hostess has received all History Forms. 2) History Forms of all participants will be available in the Yahoo! list database FABRIC SWATCHES AND SAMPLE BLOCKS You must mail a business sized self-addressed stamped envelope and a check for $7.00 to cover your return postage for the exchange and your fabric swatches to Diane, address above. The self-addressed envelope will be used to send you the fabric swatches. The hostess will mail the fabric swatches to you as soon as she receives these items. You can start color coordinating your fabrics as soon as you receive your fabric swatches. You must wait for these swatches before you buy any fabric. This way all the blocks will be compatible in color. 3) Everyone is required to send the hostess a sample block. You have one month to send in your sample block. This will be your charity block for our breast cancer quilt. If you cannot meet this deadline the hostess will assume you will not be able to meet the final deadline and she will be forced to find another participant from your assigned state. |
