Less than a mile

24-year
        old
Nicole
Reinhart
crashed chest-first into
a tree
and was
killed.
Nearly a

many wonder what

EVERYONE WHO KNEW Nicole Reinhart has wres-
tled with the whys, the hows or the why-nows of her
death last September.  That she died less than a mile
away from winning the biggest bike race of her life
on the biggest day of her career is still hard to fath-
om.  The what-ifs are easier to grasp.  "Had she won
that race, she would've elevated both herself and
women's cycling to a new level," says Rene Wenzel,
a former director of the Saturn team Reinhart raced
for.  "She had the personality, the looks, the talent."
