JUNE 26- JUNE 28, 2003

Today I worked at AquaPark for a couple of hours in the afternoon. I started off at Aquacity and took a look around then went on the simulator (which was a weird rollercoaster ride in the Grand Canyon). I talked to a guy named Kiko- he's 28 and works the simulator. He actually tried to speak to me in English! He speaks about as much English as I speak Spanish.( click on the Aquacity brochure to be directed to their site ).
At AquaPark I met 2 people. Ana, who's 24 and the manager of that park, as well as Gabriel who works at the park. Ana was really nice and only spoke Spanish but she kept talking to me as if she'd known me for more than a couple of hours. Gabriel's 19 and speaks Spanish and French, which was helpful since when I didn't know how to say something in Spanish, I could ask him in French. I really enjoyed working with Ana and Gabriel-the 3 of us had many water fights since it was so hot.

I also met some Scottish teenagers today at the park. They're going home on Sunday, just like me. They were really nice and interested about my project and Canada. They asked me so many questions about how it was living at home!

For the evening we went to downtown Palma (the old area) for some sightseeing and tapas. We went inside La Seo which is a HUGE cathedral. The ceiling was extremely high and there were beautiful arches and figures. There were also many stain glass windows. I think it's the prettiest cathedral I've been in.

After visiting the cathedral we ate some tapas (which are little snacks that make up a meal) and then went on to a restaurant owned by one of Miguel's friends. At the restaurant I met Ivan Campo-a famous football player!
(picture below) He started off playing for Real Mallorca and then played for Real Madrid. He also just finished a season paying for Bolton in the English Premiership.

Well it's siesta time now. I went shopping in Palma with Christine this morning. There were so many shoe shops! Every second store sold shoes! We went into a Real Mallorca store and I bought a scarf. Afterwards we headed towards El Corte Ingles, which is a HUGE department store that I'd heard about in Spanish class. A couple of stores down was C&A, which is a popular store throughout Europe. After a couple of minutes browsing in that store, I found a nice different shirt that I was sure I couldn't find at home in Canada. Zara is a shop that a lot of Mallorcans my age go to
but I didn't like the clothes there much. We have one at home although the fashions are quite different.

During the evening we went to AquaPark for a gala for all the directors of the parks, their supporters and their families. There were about 200-300 people there!
(picture of Christine and I there below left)
After eating there we moved onto Magaluf, which is a town famous for its nightlife. There were so many Brits there! Ninety percent of the people in that town were British tourists! It was sort of like Las Vegas- everything was bright and lit up. There were all kinds of people in the streets trying to get you to go into their club or bar. I would've loved to have gone with Miguel and his friends if I'd had more time. Gabriel from AquaPark also offered to take me out one night. It's  shame that I'm running out of time in Mallorca because there's still so many things I wish I could do!

Today's my last day here! It's unbelievable how the time can go by so fast! This morning we went to the local shopping area which is on a dusty road and comprises of a few little stores and a bank.

When we got home Christine made tortilla espanola since it's my favorite Spanish meal.

I got a fax from mom- I'm meeting her in Madrid tomorrow morning. I can't believe that this time tomorrow I'm on a plane going home!

Tonight was a big night for Mallorcans- it was the final of the King's Cup for football (soccer) and Mallorca won! Tony and I were watching the game on TV and every time Mallorca scored we could hear people singing and yelling in the streets. At the end of the game fireworks started going off in Palma and aroudn Christine and Tony's house- it was Mallorca's first time at winning an important tournament like this one! Anyways I'm off to try and pack my suitcase- I have no idea how I'm going to fit all the new stuff I've gotten here and all my old stuff into my suitcase!
