| UNIT RATIONALE |
This mini unit is designed for a grade 8, Atlantic Canada Language Arts class. It could easily be expanded, however, to create an interdisciplinary unit that would draw from other middle level courses including Social Studies, Health, and even Math or Science. The topic also lends itself to study at the upper grade levels, namely in grade 12 Sociology and World Issues, and could easily be upgraded to accomodate the requirements of these courses. The intention of this unit is to educate students about this (in)famous Eastern European country and, in so doing, instill in them a greater understanding of the nation and its culture. The Atlantic Canada Middle Level English Language Arts Curriculum was chosen as a guide for the following reasons: 1) It offers a wide scope both for teaching methods and student learning 2) One of its key objectives is the development of critical and objective thought The development of critical thinking skills, as well as a familiarity with cultural sensitivity are key objectives of this unit For a detailed list of unit objectives, please click here |
