LESSONS #3 to 5 A CRITICAL LOOK at INTERNET SOURCES Time: 3 x 45-50 minutes |
Instructional Objectives: - Students will learn about Yugoslavia by examining three different websites - Students will learn what it means to be "culturally sensitive" Behavioural Objectives: - Students will be able to apply critical thinking skills while reading three different web accounts about Yugoslavia - Students will be able to answer specific questions and to reflect on the concepts of BIAS and MOTIVE as they relate to each account - Students will be able to look at each account (and ideally, at Yugoslavia) through culturally sensitive eyes - Students will be able to synthesize their learning by examining and discussing all three accounts and identifying any instances of BIAS or MOTIVE Curriculum Outcomes: # 4-10 Introduction: - inform students that they will get to put their training in BIAS and MOTIVE to the test! - if necessary, review these two concepts before proceeding Learning Activity Procedure: - set up each student at a computer and explain the activity: you are to visit 3 websites about Yugoslavia and answer questions about each. After reading each site, you will be required to reflect critically on the site and comment on any instances of BIAS or possible MOTIVE that you notice Sites to visit (in this order): www.gov.yu www.belacrkva.co.yu www.geocities.com/nicolathenifty/coverpage.html Questions to be answered (15 marks each) - students will be given 30 to 35 minutes to read each page and complete the questions - they will be expected to hand in their questions and reflections after reading each page - near the end of day 5, students will be expected to engage in a classroom discussion regarding all 3 sites and draw some conclusions regarding BIAS and MOTIVE in each - depending on the class, you may wish to discuss each site individually to break the lesson down a bit Conclusion: - summarize points brought up in class discussion - introduce next day's topic: Travel Poster and writing for a specific AUDIENCE Evaluation: - completion of questions and reflections - circulation (are students on task?) - student participation and justification of opinions Differentiation Possibilities: - have gifted students work to post class reflections on the web site. At this point, these students may wish to deviate from the course and create their own web page documenting a real or imaginary trip to another country and then prepare a commentary on elements of BIAS or MOTIVE in their own account - have modified students visit two sites and answer a modified list of questions. These students might not reflect on the BIAS/MOTIVE element |
