THIS PIECE WAS MY GCSE (16 YR OLD) EXAM. I BASED IT ENTIRELY ON STANLEY KUBRICK'S 'A CLOCKWORK ORANGE' AS THIS WAS PAINTED AT THE TIME IT WAS COMING OUT. IT HOLDS A VERY ZIG ZAGGED APROACH TO THE STORY BEING TOLD.
AT FIRST, THE MAN IN BLACK AND BLUE IS NORMAL EVERY DAY AVERAGE JOE, BUT BITTER TOWARDS SOCIETY WHICH DOESN'T INVITE HIM IN. THEN, HE IS ASTONISHED TO FIND THE NEW PURITY OF THE NEW ORDER - ULTRA VIOLENCE, THEN, AFTER THE INITIAL SHOCK, HE LAPS IT UP LIKE A THIRSTY DOG. THE MILK SYMBOLISES THE SWALLOWING OF PURITY, A BIT LIKE IN THE FILM. THEN, HE GOES OUT ON HIS PATROLS OF VIOLENCE IN WHICH HE CONDUCTS HIMSELF IN AN EXCUSEABLE MANNER. THEN, HE WONDERS, 'IS IT WORTH IT?' AND THE IMPRISONMENT OF THE ORANGE (THE PERSON - A METAPHOR) IN HIS HAND IS HIM HOLDING HIS FUTURE TO RANSOM WHILE HE CUTS HIS OWN WRIST I.E. HE IS CHOOSING VIOLENCE. THEN, A THING OF ORIGINALITY AND BEAUTY, HIS CAR - A 1970 FORD MUSTANG - MUCH CONTRASTING WITH HIS OWN PERSONALITY. THEN, FINALLY, AN ARTISTIC CHANGE TO THE ORIGINAL COVER OF THE FILM, BUT IT ALSO ACTS AS A SYMBOL OF THIS MAN'S BAPTISM INTO VIOLENCE AND MURDER. |
