The Ollie

For an ollie you've got to stand with your back foot on the tail of the board and front foot in the middle. With your back foot you must slap the tail of the board on the floor and as soon as it hits the floor you must jump into the air. If you time it correctly and your weight is off the board it will pop into the air. The board will be in the air at an angle with the nose higher then the tail so, with you directly above the board, you must drag your front foot up the board so that the board will level out. Then just stay on the board and you will land (gravity kind of sorts that bit out for you). Obviously this is all one quick movement so the timing must be perfect. As you get better you will learn to jump higher in the air, letting the board go higher, and to use your front foot to pull the board up higher as you drag it up. Back to top

180 Ollie

A 180 ollie uses the same principles as an ordinary ollie but you and the board turn through 180 degrees before you land. At the same time as you slap the tail on the floor you push it forward. So when the tail actually hits the ground you've already turned a bit. As you are in the air you've got to carry on the turn, whilst also using the same techniques used in an ollie to gain extra height. You should be on top of the board through the whole spin so you can still drag your front foot up the board. If you do it fast enough you should be able to complete the spin before you land. Kickflip

A kickflip is one of the harder basic moves and could take a while to learn. To start you stand in the same position as an ollie, but with the front foot slightly further towards the heel side. You have to pop the board into the air like an ollie but as you move your front foot up you have to flick it to the heel side so that the board spins round like a barrel roll. However, your feet have to be up and above the board else it won't flip round. You have to be directly above the board the whole time so that when its finished flipping you can move your legs down, catch the board so it doesn't flip round to much, and land. Back to top

Heelflip

A heelflip is similar to a kickflip except you flick the board forwards instead of towards you. Start with your front foot towards the heel side. Pop the board into the air and flick your foot towards the toe side. Like a kickflip, you've got to keep your feet out of the way while the board spins, and when it has finished put your feet back down to catch the board and land. Back to top

Pop shuv-it

A pop shuv-it is when the board spins 180 degrees but you stay facing the same way. There are two ways of doing this, backside and frontside.

Frontside In a frontside pop shuv-it the board spins anti-clockwise, with the tail moving forwards and the nose move backwards. I usually place my front foot further towards the nose than in an ollie, and with my toes pointing off the board. Your back foot should be on the tail. Using your front foot you slap the tail on the floor and at the same time push it forwards and round like in a 180 ollie. But unlike a 180 ollie you do not go round with the board. As soon as the board starts spinning you've got to jump in the air, probably also going backwards a bit so that when the board finishes spinning 180 you can meet the board and land.

Backside A backside pop shuv-it is the same as a frontside one but the board spinns the other way. You've got to push the tail backwards instead of forwards when you slap it on the ground. Then jump in the air, going a bit forwards this time, so that you can land. Back to top

50-50 grind

A 50-50 is when you grind on your front and back trucks. You've gotta ollie onto the ledge/box/curb you want to skate on landing with both trucks on. Say if your grinding a curb, on the pavement the wheels should be rolling along, with the edge of the curb touching the middle of your trucks. If your wheels on one side aren't touching the other side of the curb then you ain't gonna grind very far. After you've grind along you can exit the grind. You can just ollie off, or pop shuv-it off, kickflip off, whatever. Back to top

5-0 grind

This is the same as a 50-50 but you grind along on only your back trucks, like a manual. Keep your balance through the grind and then exit it. Back to top

Nose stall

Approach the object you want to nose stall on in an ollie position, with your front foot slightly more forward than usual. Ollie earlier than you would to jump up the object. When you are in the air drag your foot right up to the nose of the board. Push down so the tail is higher up than the nose. If you timed everything correctly; ollied at an appropriate height then the nose should come down on the object. Your front foot should be on the nose which is touching the object and your back foot should be higher in the air at the rear of the board. Keep your balance and exit the stall how you please, maybe a shuv-it. Back to top

Varial kickflip

To do this trick you need to know how to do a backside pop shuv it. As you start the pop shuv it and the nose starts to move forward drag your foot up board and when you get to about the screws kick out like a kickflip. The board will only flip if your weight is off the board. At the same time as doing this you have to jump forwards to meet the board once it has finished spinning/flipping. Land and ride away. This move will take a lot of practice as it is pretty hard. The next step from this is the 360 flip. Back to top

Stargrind

This is a pretty technical trick. You will get a lot of respect for this mondo move. Approach the rail/box/pole/coping/whatever and jump, landing with the outside of what ever foot on it. You then raise your arms and hold them out straight doing the same with your spare leg to make a star shape. Then grind along and exit. Back to top
