~~~~Two Lives, One Heart~~~~
Chapter Thirty~Nine
They both awoke, almost at the same time, before the alarm.
"A little anxious are we?" Elisha teased.
Nick covered his head with the blanket. "Just get out of here, will you? I'm not supposed to see you until the wedding!"
She put her head under the blanket and kissed him. "I wasn't leaving until I got that!" she giggled.
"Get lost! It's bad luck, I don't want anymore bad luck!"
Elisha laughed and pulled herself into the wheelchair. "I'm going, turtlehead, you can come out now!"
"I want to hear the door shut, I don't trust you!"
Elisha pouted even though he couldn't see her. "What a thing to say about your bride to be!"
"Aww, you know what I mean!"
"Yes, I know, I'm gone!" She loudly banged the door shut and went down the hall to call the girls.
The morning and afternoon were filled with hair appointments, makeovers and decorating the basement of the house for the reception.
"So what do the guys do the day of the wedding?" Leslie asked, as they hung ballons and ribbons on the tables. "They don't have to go through all this stuff to get ready!"
"They are probably sitting at Brian's house, drinking beer and watching naughty movies!" Christine teased.
"He better not be!" Elisha warned.
"What kind of naughty movies?" Angel piped up.
"Umm, the kind that only boys watch, right Linda?" Christine muttered, nervously.
"This place looks great Jane! You didn't leave much for us to do!" Elisha said in wonderment, looking around when they finished.
The basement rec room was transformed into a beautiful, colorful dining hall with plants, ribbons and balloons everywhere. The tables were covered with roses and streamers and everything looked fabulous.
"I'm glad you like it honey, but it's time to stop admiring it!"
Elisha glanced at her watch. "Oh my God! I've got an hour and a half! C'mon girls, this mission requires all hands on deck!"
Brian helped Nick with his tie. "Are you nervous, buddy? Let me see your hands."
Nick held his hand up and laughed as he watched it shaking wildly. "I guess I am!"
The two men hugged. "Thanks Bri. Do you have the ring?"
Brian felt his tuxedo jacket pocket. "Yep, right here! Are we ready to go?"
Nick took one last look in the mirror and nodded. "Yeah! C'mon fellas! I'm getting married!"
The crowd gathered on the beach looked up expectantly when the door from the house opened. Aaron was first out, escorting his mother. Angel came next with her father. Howie escorted Leslie, while AJ walked with BJ. The girls were wearing lovely sea-blue dresses, that matched the blue of their eyes. Kevin escorted Christine and Linda, the maids of honor, down the aisle and left them to go and get Elisha. After a few minutes Nick and Brian made their way down to the beach. Jane started crying at the sight of her son. Bob smiled and shook Nick's hand before enveloping him in a huge bear hug. Nick gave his mother a hug and went back to his place to wait for the love of his life.
"Are you ready love?" Kevin watched as Elisha fiddled with her headpiece one last time. "You look beautiful, you know."
Elisha frowned at the mirror. Is he out there yet?"
Kevin pushed the curtain aside and saw Nick looking at the house expectantly. "Yep, and he's looking for you."
She sighed and smoothed the front of her dress. "Okay. Give me the ring." She took Nick's wedding ring and put it on her thumb. "Do you have everything all set?"
"It's all out there, tucked away, no one knows." he promised.
She took a deep breath. "Let's go Mr. Richardson, my Prince awaits!"
The door opened and Nick drew a deep breath. "This is it, Carter. Here she comes to marry you, are you ready?" He nodded to himself and raised his head to watch her come down the aisle. When Kevin appeared pushing the wheelchair a single tear ran down his face. "She looks so gorgeous!" Nick thought to himself. "I can't believe she's going to be my wife in a few minutes!" He wiped the tear away and smiled as he saw her beaming at him.
When Kevin reached the top of the walkway to the beach, he left Elisha there and walked over to the side of the deck.
"What's he doing, Brian?" Nick asked.
Brian hunched his shoulders. "Don't ask me?"
In a minute Kevin walked back over to Elisha carrying something. A buzz went through the assembled crowd when they realized what it was.
Kevin arrived back at Elishas side and placed the items next to her then stepped back. Nick watched in amazement as Elisha slowly pulled herself out of the chair and began walking toward him using the canes. Nick made a move to walk towards her and Brian held him back. She didn't take her eyes off of him the whole way. It seemed like the longest walk she had ever taken. There wasn't a dry eye when she arrived at Nick's side and he embraced her tightly.
"Elisha! When? How?"
She smiled and shook her head at him. "I had some pains in my legs one day on a session with Kathy and I worked my butt off ever since then. I wanted to walk down the aisle to you on our wedding day."
Nick brushed the tears from her cheeks. "Oh my God! This is so wonderful! I love you Elisha!" He hugged her tight. "I'm so happy right now, Elisha, I think I'm gonna burst!" They turned towards the minister, who was also wiping tears away. He began to recite the time honored wedding vows.
"Do you, Nickolas Gene, take this woman to be your lawful wedded wife?"
Nick gazed at her lovingly. "I do!"
"And do you, Elisha Marie, take this man to be your lawful wedded husband?"
Elisha beamed.
"I do!"
