Chapter 32

Nick rushed from the kitchen to answer the phone. Elisha was still sleeping soundly, his parents had gone out for the morning and he was trying his best to get the kids breakfast and look after the twins too. "Hello?" Diana cried from her bouncy seat as Nick left the room and her squeals were very loud now. "Oh hi, David. What's up?" He listened intently. "A court date, finally?" Nick nodded and strained to look in the kitchen. "Okay, so it's next week for me and Elisha the next?" He grabbed a pen off the desk and jotted the dates on a slip of paper. "Got it. I'll have Elisha call you when she gets up." Nick ran back to the kitchen just in time to pop the toast up before it was burned beyond edible. Rebecca and Brian were banging their cereal spoons on the table and Diana and Gene were loudly making their presence known from their seats on the floor. Elisha stood in the doorway, smiling at her husband running around trying to prepare the food and settle the kids down. She held her finger to her lips to hush the children. "Hey guys, mommy is still sleeping!" He exclaimed, bouncing Gene's chair with his foot while he buttered the toast. "Need some help, Mr. Mom?" Elisha took the knife from his hand and nudged him to an empty chair. "Do I!" Nick picked up Gene and rocked him gently. "How long have you been awake?" Elisha expertly finished getting the older childrens plates ready and set them before them. "A few minutes, not too long. Thanks for letting me sleep in!" Nick smiled and exchanged Gene for Diana as Elisha took their son and started to feed him. "We got a call from the lawyer." Nick looked at her and smiled when he saw her worried face. "The court dates are set. Mine is next week and yours is the week after." "Does he still think that he can get your charges dropped?" Elishas forehead crinkled with concern. "He didn't say, but he thought so the last time I talked to him. Isn't it great though? This is almost over!" Elisha smiled faintly. "I hope so. I want to go home."

Elisha returned the lawyers call after breakfast was finished and she sighed as she hung up the phone. "He wants to come over this afternoon and run some things by us. I told him it was okay." Nick nodded at her and squeezed her shoulder. "I'm feeling so good about this 'Lish. I just know it is going to work out." "Do you think your parents would take the kids out while he's here?" "I'm sure they will, it probably would be easier without them underfoot." Elisha grinned. "Well, just the older ones. Our mini eating machines here won't last that long." Nick picked up Diana and rubbed noses with her. "Did you hear what your mommy said about you? Can you believe it?" He continued making faces and cooing at the small girl until he heard Elisha laugh out loud. "Now there's a sound I haven't heard for awhile! Was that a laugh?" He set Diana down and advanced toward Elisha on his hands and knees. Elisha giggled again and swatted her hands at him. "Go away, you goofball!" "I think it was, my God, I don't believe it!" Nick grabbed Elisha and wrapped his arms around her. "I love the sound of your laughter. It makes me think you have hope again." He kissed her gently on the cheek. "How can I not, you're so positive that everything will work out. I think it's starting to rub off on me!" She leaned her head back and kissed her husband passionately. Nick started to return the kiss with equal fervor until he heard a small cough. He reluctantly broke off the kiss and looked up to see his parents standing over them. Elisha giggled and stood up, holding her hand out to pull Nick to his feet. "Hello! Did you have a good morning?" She and Jane retreated into the kitchen as Jane told her about the restaurant they had been to. Nick and his father followed them more slowly, knowing they would be roped into helping with lunch.

"Thanks so much for taking the kids!" Elisha hugged Jane as they were heading out the door. "It will be so much easier to talk without interruptions." "It's no problem dears." Jane kissed Nick and put her arms around Rebecca and Brian. "We're going to go see the new Disney movie, aren't we?" Rebecca and Brian nodded eagerly and hugged their parents. "Bye mommy! Bye daddy! Love you!" they chorused. "Love you bunches!" Nick yelled to them, while Elisha blew kisses. They waved until the van was out of sight and turned back to the house. "I'll clean the kitchen, if you look after the living room." Nick offered. Elisha grinned ruefully as she surveyed the mess in the room. "I think you might have the better end of the deal there!" Nick laughed and ran to the kichen before she could change her mind. Once the house was tidy they sat on the sofa and pretended to watch television as they waited for their lawyer to arrive. "What do you think he has figured out for us?" Elisha asked. Just then the doorbell sounded. "Let's go find out shall we?" Nick answered and got up to welcome the lawyer in.
