~~~~Love Above All~~~~
Chapter 28
"My babies!" Elisha shrieked and got out of the car fast as lightning, running to hug her older children. "Mommy!" Rebecca and Brian tackled her halfway and they all ended up in a heap on the ground. Nick laughed and mock pouted. "What about daddy?" "Daddy!" The three on the ground yelled and pulled Nick playfully down to join the reunion. After a few minutes of hugging and kissing, Nick helped Elisha to her feet. "Hi Mom." she said, giving Nick's mom a peck on the cheek. "How can I thank you for all you've done for us?" "Just stay safe." Jane said, handing Diana to Nick and then retrieving Gene from his bouncy chair on the porch. "How were they?" Nick asked, as he cuddled Diana to his face, kissing her chubby cheeks and then making faces at her. "They are such well-behaved kids, all of them!" Bob marveled. "Very easy for the grandparents to look after them!" Nick's face glowed with pride, "Of course, I don't raise no bratty kids!" Elisha giggled, "Not like you were when you were a kid, right?" Nick pouted again. "I wasn't a brat!" He spied his parents disbelieving faces. "Was I?" "Oh no!" said Jane, gathering him in a hug. "You were a perfect angel!" Nick grinned. "See, a perfect angel, I knew it!"
They let the children stay up a little later, mainly to spend more time with them and also because Elisha couldn't bear to stop playing with them long enough to put them to bed. Nick yawned loudly from the couch. "Elisha, don't you think it's time to get some sleep?" She looked over at Nick and noticed the pronounced circles under his eyes again. "Oh Nick, I forgot you didn't get any sleep last night, I'm s..." Nick wagged his finger in her face. "Don't you say it! Just help me get these monkeys to bed." Jane and Bob offered to tidy up while they put the children to bed and Elisha accepted gratefully. "Now that he mentions it, I'm exhausted too. I think we'll just tumble in bed right after." "We can get a room at the hotel, if you like, so that you have some privacy." Bob mentioned, passing with a pile of dishes from the table. "Oh no you don't!" Nick hollered from the hallway to the bedroom. "Elisha and I won't need privacy tonight anyway." Nick peeked his head around the corner. "I'm too tired!" Elisha laughed at his outburst. "He's right. Let me get the kids to bed and I'll set up the couch for you. I'd offer the bed, but, as you know, those babies like to keep odd hours."
Once everyone was settled, Nick and Elisha shared a quick shower and fell into bed. They cuddled together and kissed softly. "I'm so nervous about tomorrow, Nick. I'm going to have to tell David about the private investigator, he's going to want to know how I knew where Mandy was." "Let David handle everything, if he asks you how you knew where she was..." Nick yawned. "Sorry, you'll just have to tell him. You have to tell the truth. He'll know how to handle things." Elisha buried her face in his chest. "I'm just so scared, I'm going out of my mind." she whispered. Nick kissed the top of her head. "Try not worry baby. I'm with you every step of the way, you know that, right?" She nodded. "And David is the best in the business, he'll get us through this." Elisha nodded again. "Okay, I'll try to think positive." "That's the way." Nick rubbed her back. "Now, let's try to get some sleep, alright?" They wrapped their arms around one another and were asleep almost instantly.
Jane padded into the bedroom a few hours later. Diana was crying and neither Nick nor Elisha were stirring. "C'mon little one." Jane whispered. "Mommy and daddy need their rest. Do you think you can make do with Grandma Jane one more time?" Diana's cries settled into whimpers and she rested her head on Jane's shoulder. "Oh good, let's go find that bottle." As she turned to go she heard Nick say, softly, "Thanks mama. I heard her just before you came in, I can barely move I'm so tired." Jane moved over to the bed and sat beside Nick. "You get your rest honey. I've missed the children, I don't mind getting up with them." She brushed his blond hair off his forehead and kissed him. "Go back to sleep. Don't worry about the babies." Nick snuggled under the blankets. "Thanks ma." he repeated as Jane closed the door.
