Just To See Her

~~~~Chapter 25~~~~
They had a brief moment when they didn’t think they were going anywhere. Nick figured he had the keys for the cars with him when the plane crashed and he couldn’t remember where the spare might be. Kathy finally found them stuffed at the back of his computer desk drawer. She decided to take the Durango. The thought of even sitting in the other expensive cars, little lone driving them scared her. Yes, the Durango was expensive too, but just seemed a little safer to her. She helped Nick into the passenger seat and snapped his seatbelt tight. "I don’t think I’ve ever let anyone else drive this." Nick mentioned to her. "I’ll take good care of it." She popped open the glove compartment and scanned the door pockets. "I don’t suppose you have a Florida map in here, do you?" "No, but one thing I should be able to do is navigate you around Florida. Where are we going first?" Nick gave her excellent instructions to the hospital and they pulled into the parking lot about 20 minutes later.
Kathy told the day nurse who they were here to see and they settled in the waiting room. "I’m nervous." Nick said, tapping his fingers on his knee. "Why?" Kathy asked. "It’s just routine." "I just don’t like going to the doctors much." he mumbled. "I thought you told me she was nice." "Oh, she is!" Nick assured her. "Dr. Reeves is the best, but, you know." Nick left his sentence unfinished and Kathy had a feeling she knew. "She’s an attractive woman, right?" He nodded. "And you have the same problem with her that you had with me that time in the shower?" He nodded again, his face reddening. Kathy smiled and put her arm around his shoulder. "Nick, I hate to tell you this, but all men have that problem with female doctors or nurses. I’ve seen more erections than a girl has a need to in a lifetime." Nick snorted in laughter. "It’s true!" Kathy protested as Nick continued to laugh. "Well, at least enough old guy ones!" Nick was still laughing as they were called to enter the office of Dr. Reeves.
Dr. Alexa Reeves glanced up as Kathy and Nick were ushered into the office. "Nick! How are you?" She stood and gave him a huge hug. "I’m sorry I couldn’t get over to see you when you were in the hospital. "Don’t worry about it, Lex." "I wanted to, but I just couldn’t get away. AJ kept me updated and Kathy forwarded some information to me before you came home." "You two know each other? I mean other than patient and doctor?" Nick smiled. "Lex is AJ's girl!" "No!" Kathy couldn’t believe it, this petite, professional, seemingly normal blonde was AJ's girlfriend? "Yeah!" Alexa smiled. "A lot of people have a hard time believing it." Kathy was intrigued. "How did you meet? I can’t see you swimming in the same circles as him." "He got an infection in his second last tattoo, no, the last one, no....well, I can’t remember honestly which one it was! But he came to my office to have it looked after and the rest is history." "She couldn’t resist the tats!" Nick teased. "I’ve grown to love them." she admitted. "Speaking of which, I see you have two new ones." Nick held his arm out so Alexa could inspect them. "Very nice. Just don’t mess with the armband, buddy!" Alexa winked at Kathy. "All the sex appeal he has is right there in that one tattoo!"
Kathy gave her the lowdown on Nick since they returned from the Bahamas and then left them for his examination. "Can you get undressed yourself, Nick, or do you need some assistance?" "Are, are you going to help me?" he asked with a slight nervous stutter. "No, I can get a male nurse in here to help you." Nick agreed and once that was done she helped him onto the examining table. "How have you been feeling Nick?" He considered for a moment. "Pretty good. I’ve had a little shortness of breath now and then but nothing too bad." Alexa jotted some notes. "And mentally?" Nick chewed thoughtfully on his lower lip. "I was feeling pretty sorry for myself until Kathy told me about her experiences being blind. I’ve tried to be better since then." "Yes, your doctor in the Bahamas told me about that. I think she will be excellent to have around as you get accustomed to your lack of sight." Alexa set her notes on the side table. "Okay, Nick, I need you to lie down now. I’m going to remove your gown to the waist so that I can check your incision." Alexa had gotten used to the sight of handsome young men disrobing for her, and had stopped herself from admiring them, but Nick and AJ had changed all that for her. If AJ hadn’t gotten her first, she would have been after Nick for sure. She laughed to herself. Could there be two more different personality and body types she could possibly be attracted to? But she had fun with AJ, they shared a lot in common. She had the feeling if she and Nick had ended up together she would have taken the mothering role with him. He needed a lot of unconditional love and support.
"The incision is healing fine, Nick." "Will there be a scar?" "Oh I think so." "Will it be as big as Brian's?" Alexa looked down at his chest again, mentally calculating the size of the incision and trying to remember what Brian's looked like. "Hmm. I think so. Of course you needed a bigger incision because you needed more work done inside." "Woohoo!" Nick crowed. "I told him mine was bigger!" Alexa laughed. "It’s all size with you guys, isn’t it?" She listened to his breathing next, and examined the wrist and leg that were broken in the crash. "Well Nick, it looks like everything is healing just fine. I want you to come back in and have your cheek looked at for plastic surgery." Nick raised his hand and rubbed his face. It felt like a gravel road. "How bad does it look?" "It’s pretty bad." Alexa admitted candidly. "But a little day surgery and it will be as good as new." she assured him. "Okay, I think that is it, Nick." She glanced at her notes. "You are healing very well, come back in about a month and that cheek should be healed enough for surgery. We’ll give you another checkup then too." She called the nurse back to help Nick get dressed. "I’ll go over some things with you and Kathy once you are proper again, okay?"
Nick shuffled back into the office with Alexa leading him. "So you get to show this big lug the ropes, huh?" she teased. Kathy grinned and squeezed Nicks hand when he sat beside her. "Yup, I hope he’s not too much trouble for me!" Alexa went over the medications Nick was still taking, and gave Kathy some prescriptions so they could get them filled when they ran out. "Nick, you’ve got a hard road ahead, but you know God must this you are up to this challenge since he gave it to you. I know you can do it. Let Kathy help you and guide you and you will be fine." Nick ducked his head and smiled shyly. "Thanks Lex. I hope you are right." "Kathy, here is the address and directions to an excellent medical supply house." Alexa said, handing Kathy a small envelope. "There’s also the brochure the Association for the Visually Impaired and some information pertaining to seeing eye guide dogs. The people at the Association are wonderful and can help you a lot." Kathy shook her hand and thanked her. "Take it easy Nick." Alexa hugged him again. "Call me if you need anything, okay?" He nodded and returned the hug. "I will, or Kathy will." he promised and kissed her cheek. Alexa watched them walk out the door together and put her hand to her cheek. "Good luck honey, you’ll need it."
