Just To See Her

~~~~Chapter 22~~~~
Kathy sat for a few minutes absorbing Jane's threat. "I am not going to let you bother me!" She said aloud to the empty living room. She couldn’t believe after all the protestations that she had made about staying with Nick once he was home that she had left so soon. "I guess it doesn’t take long for a rat to show its true colours." She gathered up her luggage and trudged down the hall with it, dropping her bags on the bed and falling back onto it herself. "This will certainly be an interesting time." she muttered to herself.. Sitting up, she pulled one of her bags close to her and began to unpack. There was so much storage space she didn’t know where to begin. "Well, let’s hang this stuff up first." She pulled open the bi-fold door and stared in amazement. Womens clothes filled the closet, top to bottom. Kathy opened the next door and was greeted by row upon row of womens shoes. "Well, guess the girlfriend is a shopper!" An inspection of the dresser offered up nightclothes and lingerie. "More than I needed to know!" She shut the drawer with a grin "I wonder if Mother put me in here so I would notice that the girlfriend was a semi-permanent fixture?" she mused to herself. She walked out to the hall, hoping to find another room to call her own. As she moved past Nicks room, she thought she could hear him crying. She went past at first, thinking it best to leave him alone, then she walked back, pushing the door open slowly.
"Nick? Are you alright?" She poked her head in and could see him lying in the bed on his side, blankets pulled up to his shoulders. "Nick?" She heard some more sniffling and his hands moved around near his face. "I’m fine." He rolled over onto his back and turned his head in her direction. She could see that he had been crying, and probably had been for some time. Her feet carried her to his bedside before her head told her to go there. Settling on the edge of the bed, she took his hand in hers. "Are you sure? Because you look pretty upset." He nodded, then dragged his hand under his nose, sniffling again. "I was just thinking how I used to love sitting here in bed and looking out at the water. It relaxed me so much. The sound of the waves, and watching the water was so calming to me." Tears started running down his face freely again. "I would go outside and just sit by the pool, watching the water. I just wish..." "What Nick?" Kathy urged. "I wish I would have died. That would have been better than being able to see and having it taken away from me." "Nick, imagine all the people in the world that have never seen in their lives. At least you had that gift for awhile." He nodded but she could tell he wasn’t convinced. And she didn’t expect him to be, it was too soon for him to realize the blessing of having been sighted.
"Okay." Kathy thought for a moment. "Have you got clothes on?" "Do you think my mother would put me to bed in the nude?" "You’ve got a point there!" She pulled him up to a sitting position. "Let’s go outside." He let go of her hand and let his fall to the bedspread. "It won’t be the same now." "Come on!" she cajoled him. Nick sat there motionless. "Nick, you can still hear the ocean and feel it...let’s go out and sit for awhile." "I’m tired." he protested. "Then you would have been asleep already, come on!" She smiled as he swung his legs over the side of the bed and grinned. "You’re not gonna let up are you?" "Nope!" She took his hand and led him to the doors leading out to the pool and patio. "I’d like to sit by the water and dip my legs in, you?" He nodded and let her help him to sit at the edge of the pool. "I really love this Nick, did you have it built this way?" He swung his legs to and fro, making the water swirl and glimmer in the moonlight. "No, it was here. It’s the main reason I bought this place. I could care less about the house, I’m hardly ever here anyway. But I love the water." They sat together quietly for a few moments until Nick broke the silence with a flat statement. "I’ll have to get rid of the boat." She looked at him and saw tears shining on his cheeks again. "The cars, the boat, the video games...even my God-damned bike that I never ride." "Nick, I know it’s hard..." "I want to go in." He stood up and began walking toward the doors with his hands reaching in front of him. He banged into the door and found the handle on his third try. She watched helplessly as he charged into the house and promptly fell over one of the chairs in the room. Kathy ran into the house only to find Nick crawling on his hands and knees, trying desperately to find a clear path to his bedroom. After hitting another obstacle he collapsed onto the floor in tears. "I hate this!" he screamed as he pounded the floor. "Nick?" Kathy hesitantly moved to sit beside him. "Go away." he said, sullenly. "You’re just laughing at me. This is so funny isn’t it?" "I’m not laughing at you Nick." she said, softly. "Why did I even ask you to come, you don’t know what it’s like to be blind!" "Yes, I do Nick." He sat up and she could have sworn he was looking at her. "What do you mean? You’re not blind." "No Nick, but I was."
