~~~~Just To See Her~~~~
Chapter 15
"This is my God-damned life!" Nick shouted and slammed his good hand on the bed, making the small collection of stuffed toys jump from the force. "I want her to come with me! She understands what I am going through!"
Jane looked at her husband in shock. Their oldest son had never spoken like this to them before.
"I tend to agree with him, Jane." Bob looked from his wife to his son. "This is one of the hardest things Nick will ever have to deal with and if having someone familiar with him helps, what is the problem?"
"I have hired people, competent people, to look after him once he leaves our house and goes back to his own!" Jane fumed.
"Hello, mother? Im blind, not deaf!" Nick remarked, sarcastically. "Im still in the room and I am going to my own house when I am out of the hospital, not yours!"
"You cant!" Jane persisted. "You cant see!"
"Im aware of that mother!" Nick said, thinly.
"How old are these people you hired for me, 100?"
Jane gasped and then blushed. She had hired recently retired nurses to look after her son, but what was wrong with that? "What does age have to do with it?" she asked quickly.
"Exactly! You are afraid that Kathy will try and make a move on your baby boy, isnt that it? That maybe I might find someone who loves me? And cares for me? That I wont need you anymore?" He stopped in surprise, not knowing where that outburst had come from. All the yelling had exhausted him. He took a deep breath and put his hand to his chest. Jane moved quickly over to him and asked him if he was alright. Nick pushed her hands away and took more deep breaths. "Just leave me alone!" he gasped out.
Kathy knew she shouldnt be listening outside the door, but by this point anyone in the lobby could hear the bickering Carter family. "Why cant they leave him alone?" she sighed to herself. "Dont they see what they are doing to him?"
She hesitated before pushing open the door. "Oh! Sorry, I didnt realize your parents were here." She lied to Nick, as she pushed her cart in the room.
"Its okay, Kathy, they were just leaving." He said it coldly and Kathy tried to look anywhere but at Jane and Bob.
Jane stood and moved next to the bed. "Were not done discussing this Nickolas."
"Yes, we are mother. Can you leave now?"
Janes face wore a look of shock yet again. She stamped out the door and slammed it shut behind her.
"Dad?" Nick called out. "Are you still here?"
Bob sat on the edge of the bed. "Im here son."
"How do you do it?"
"What?"
"Put up with her! Shes driving me crazy with this." Nick threw his head back on the pillows. "Why wont she let me make my own decisions?"
Bob looked to Kathy, unsure of what to say. "Nick, this is hard for her, for all of us, to deal with." He placed his hand over Nicks. "She just wants what she thinks is best for you."
"I know, but what she thinks is best maybe isnt." Nick sat up again and attempted to fluff his pillow with one hand. Kathy moved quietly over to him and took the pillow from him. Bob smiled as she fluffed the pillow and placed it behind Nick, then pulling the covers over him smoothly.
"Have you thought any more about joining Nick in Florida, Kathy?"
Kathy stood back over by her cart, thinking. She held a glass of water and Nicks pills in her hand.
"Do you mind if I sit down?"
Bob pulled out a chair for her and gestured to it. She handed Nick his medication and waited for him to finish his water before sitting.
"I have thought, quite a lot, about this." She answered truthfully. "I just dont know if it will be the right move for me." She heard Nick start to protest. "Dont Nick. I need to get all this out and then maybe we all can think of something." Kathy pulled a sheet of paper out of her pocket. "These are my concerns. This will be a temporary job, first of all."
"It doesnt have to be." Nick said, hopefully.
"Nick," Kathy laughed. "Eventually, you will be able to get around on your own and you wont want me there to bug you. Like when your girlfriend visits!"
"I dont have a girlfriend." Nick pouted.
"Anyway," Kathy continued. "I moved here because there was no jobs in the States. What do I do when my time is over with you?"
Bob considered for a moment. "Cant you ask for some sort of job priority when you come back?"
Kathy leaned forward, interested. "Like a guarantee my job will be here when I return?"
"Exactly! You should be able to arrange something like that. Especially if there is a shortage of nurses here on the island."
Kathy jotted the idea down on her sheet. "Thanks Mr. Carter! I will ask about it."
Bob smiled graciously. "No problem Kathy! Now, what where your other concerns?"
Bob and Kathy bent their heads together and ran through her list of questions. Nick smiled to himself while listening to them work things out and make arrangements. She was going to do it! She was going to come home with him! He just knew it!
