Gonna Get Close To You

~~~~~Chapter 2~~~~
"I'm gonna get close to you, Oh oh so close"
Nick yanked his cell phone back out of his pocket. Quickly he dialed his bodyguards asking them to meet him at his car in the parking garage below. Tossing his few meager supplies into his back pack, Nick grabbed his car keys and stepped out into the hallway.
"Where are you going, Mr. Carter?" The FBI agent stepped in front of him with his arms folded.
"I'm leaving. She knows I'm here. I just got this under the door." He handed the agent the note and envelope. "You guys were right here, how did she get that close that she could slip something under my door?"
The agent shook his head. The girl. The one with the headphones. He called his partner over and sent him in the direction the girl had gone earlier.
"We're sorry sir, we made a mistake. My partner is following her trail. I'll escort you to your car."
Nick shook his head. "You escort me to the parking garage. My bodyguards are there waiting for me. Then you help catch the sicko that is stalking me!"
The agent nodded in the affirmative and the two men made their way to the elevator and the exit to the parking garage.
"There they are." Nick pointed to Carlos and Eddie, both standing by his car far at the opposite end and looking warily around the deserted garage for any sign of movement. He shook the agent's hand, thanking him and waved as the elevator doors started to close. Turning back to his bodyguards, he smiled and started walking towards them.
"You fumble for the keys, I'm six or seven steps behind you, I'm so close to you"
Nick almost physically felt the weight of tension drop from his shoulders. He was getting out of here, she didn't know where he was or where he was going. No plans had been, nothing had been said. No way she could know where he was going, hell, he didn't even know where he would end up. He thought he heard a footstep behind him and he sped up his pace, just a little. "Nerves." he whispered out loud. Eddie and Carlos seemed so far away. Nick was sure he heard footsteps now, and he was almost running to reach the car and trying to dig his keys out of his jeans pocket at the same time.
"Nick! Behind you! Run!"
Nick jerked his head around at Eddie's shout.
There she was, almost right behind him. She was walking calmly towards him, a gun in her hand.
Nick broke into a full out run for the car. He dropped the keys and knelt awkwardly to pick them up. As he stood, he saw Eddie fall before he heard the shot from the gun behind him.
"No!" he screamed and ran again. He watched in horror as the scene before him played out in slow motion. Carlos leaned over Eddie, and then looked up to Nick, urging him on. Carlos leaped up to duck behind the car and then he went down too, blood spurting from the gunshot in his chest. Nick heard someone screaming as he ran, he figured the sound must be coming from him. He gripped the keys in his sweaty hand. Almost there, he was still ahead of her and he was almost at the car. He could do it, he would make it. Unless she shot him too.
"Are you terrified of me? What do I know about you? How did I find out?"
"Nick, stop running." Her voice was calm and patient. "I can easily shoot you too. I don't want to though. Stop now."
Nick stopped and stood frozen in place. He tried to concentrate his stare on the wall of the garage, not wanting to look at the bodies of his friends or at her. He felt her come up behind him, her fingers brushing over his shoulders, waist, behind.
"You're so beautiful. I told you I was going to get close to you, didn't I?"
"What do you want?" His voice was a shaky whisper.
She laughed, her mouth close to his ear. "I want you, Nickolas."
"Are you going to kill me?"
"Don't you think I would have by now? Look at your friends over there."
Nick shook his head no, he couldn't look at them again. The sight made him sick to his stomach.
"Look at them!" She grabbed the back of his head and twisted it around by yanking on his hair. "If you don't listen to me and do what I ask, you will be lying there with them. Do you want that?"
He shook his head no again, now trying not to cry.
"Good boy." She stroked his cheek softly. "Very good. Now let's get in the car, shall we?" She held out her hand for the keys. Nick dropped them in the palm of her hand and stood waiting for her next command. "Let's go, into the car, dear." She smiled and pushed him towards the car.
"You think I'm a fool or maybe some kind of lunatic, Say I'm wasting all my time but I know what to do with it, It's as plain as black and white"
They had been driving for several hours and Nick was starving. He didn't dare say anything though. She still had the gun and he knew she wasn't afraid to use it. She looked at him and smiled.
"You're hungry, aren't you?"
"How did you know?"
"Nick, I know all about you. I know when you sleep, when you wake up, when you eat. I know everything." She pulled the car over to the side of the road and grabbed a bag from the backseat. "Put these on." She hand him a baseball cap and sunglasses. "We wouldn't want anyone recognizing you now."
She started the car back up as Nick pulled on the accessories. After a few minutes, they pulled into a McDonalds drive through. Nick sat stunned as she ordered all his favorites, right down to the sauce he liked to dip his french fries in. She handed him the bag and Nick gratefully dug out a hamburger and started to eat.
"Where are you taking me?" he asked, between mouthfuls.
"Why, to our house Nick. Tonight is the night we start our life together."
