                         the Commonwealth Trans Antarctic Expedition
Was an expedition to cross antarctica,that was the first overland crossing of the continent.it was a private venture as so many were in this great "heroic age",it was supported by the governments of the UK,New Zealand,USA,Australia and South Africa under the patronage of Queen Elizabeth ll.
It was not crossed again until 1981 by Sir Ranulph Fiennes.
The expedition was lead by Sir Vivian Fuchs and New Zealander Sir Edmund Hillary as leader of the Ross sea party.
The New Zealand party included scientists participating in the (IGY) the international geophysical year,who were sperately based at Halley bay.
Dr Fuchs recieved his knighthood for this feat.
