Now, I have to admit that if you even know about this website, I find it very difficult to believe that you don't know what a LARP is.  But, nevertheless,  we must be prepared for all contingences.  Thus the inclusion of this page.

LARP is an acronym for Live Action Role Play.  Another form is LARPG or Live Action Role Playing Game.  While it has similarities to other RPG's (Role Playing Games) it is also very different.

More than likely you are familiar with some form of RPG.  Be it Dungeons and Dragons, D20 Modern, Final Fantasy, or simply playing your favourite pro in Tony Hawk Pro Skater.  In all of the afore mentioned games you (the player) are taking on a role of a character in the game.  Most likely, these and other games you know have rules governing your characters abilities.  That is how LARPing and other RPG's are similar, but that is also where the similarities end.

In your typical RPG you and the other players are gathered around a table top/TV/computer to play out your story.  Whereas in a LARP you and the other players actually get up and act out your characters.  Players generally wear costumes (be they as simple as a suit coat or as complex as latex prosthetics), and each player is expected to behave as their character would.  Each player as a character sheet which sums up their abilities and may even include character history, motivation and goals.

Each game is acted out live in real time (except for combat) dialogue between characters is improvised on the spot, instead of scripted.  Combat itself is not acted out and no prop weapons are allowed, for both the safety of the players and bystanders.

Thats about it.  I hope this helps.  Now get out there and start LARPing!
