Butch
reinvented this old technique when we were kids, about 13 yr. old,
staying with his parents in their cabin in the Catskills near Grahamsville,
New York. Wouldn't have believed it possible myself if I hadn't seen
it with my own eyes--and even then I can't get many fisherman to believe
the story when I tell it. (The fish he caught that day lived to tell
about it—we relocated them to a smaller stream and pond near the cabin.)

How to catch a trout with your bare
hands.
Bring one hand sloooowly——if you can see it move, it’s too fast——from
below and behind the fish up till your fingers graze the fish’s belly.
With fumbling fingers numb with cold, try to lightly stroke the belly while
bringing your thumb over the top. Gently squeeze, then quickly flip
the fish up on shore. Prepare for hypothermia. Those trout streams
are cold!
