PATRICIA THOMPSON ROY

Patricia Thompson-Roy was born April 11, 1941
in Nyack, New York to Thomas Vincent and Vivien Mitchell Thompson. She
was the oldest of three children. Her brother, Tommy, died in 1978 from
an auto-race accident. Pat attended the Nyack Public Schools and received
her Bachelor of Science degree in Bacteriology from Syracuse University.
Pat joined Pilgrim Baptist Church in 1954, where she remained active
until her health failed. As a youth she was a member of the junior choir,
the BYF, Sunday School and Youth Usher Board. Later, her church involvements
were the Ladies Usher Board and the Helping Hand Club. In 1981 she
helped plan the first church recognition of graduates. In 1988 Pat initiated
a Poinsettia Program for the holiday season, which will be continued in
her honor.
Pat was employed for 15 years at Nyack Hospital as the supervisor
of the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory. For the past 4 years she was employed
at Lederle Laboratories in Pearl River as a microbiologist.
Pat was very active in the community which she loved and served.
Her activites included a lifetime membership of the Nyack Branch of the
NAACP, the Rockland Negro Scholarship Fund, where she served as Scholarship
Chairperson and past Vice President, and the Rockland County Alumnae Chapter
of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
She was past PTA President. In 1978 she was elected to the Nyack
Board of Education, the second Black to hold the position of Trustee. She
served three terms as Board President and had previously served 5 terms
as Vice President. In 1984 she was appointed to fill an unexpired term
as trustee for Rockland BOCES and in 1985 she was elected to a full 5 year
term.
In 1986 Pat was presented the Martin Luther King, Jr. Award for Outstanding
Community Services.
Pat was known to be an inspiring, kind, and a caring person. She
demonstrated great courage and strength in her long illness and will be
greatly missed by those whose lives she shared and touched.
