BE ADVISED:They can cause a train wreck, freezing up the computer, if you try to pounce on them too quickly to close them.
But you can get rid of them—until the next time you load the page. Just let them load or 'unfurl' first, then click in the upper right corner, first on the up-arrow or wedge, then on the "x" to close.
There's good reason to keep a lot of stuff on the Home Page: Because a pop-up appears every time you load a different page, the Home Page is really about 8 pages stitched end to end. No pop-ups as you go from one to the other. That's also a reason to go light on pics and graphics on the Homepage. The Homepage, mostly text, loads pretty fast. (But no reason not to have photos on our Personal Pages.)
WHAT THEY BUY:Pop-ups are the price we pay for free hosting of Web pages with virtually no limit on size. Free space up to 15 megabytes; we've used less than 1/2 megabyte so far—-as of November '00. By comparison, most Internet service providers, like mine, limit you to 1 or 2 megabytes.
That leaves quite a bit of room for photos. Feel free to e-mail me if you have questions about how to scan and send photographs, or send me a copy that I can scan). —DP
