Vermont is very different from New Hampshire in many ways! The peakbagger turned county highpointer will be delighted to find that the five Vermont 4,000 footers give him four counties, while the extra peaks on the New England 100 Highest list provide another four counties. Apart from Grand Isle all county highpoints have real elevation, and of these only Bennington County is a drive up. There is a road up to the highpoint of Essex County, but it is gated, so it a walk-up.

I had done the eight peaks on the New England 100 Highest list well before even hearing about county highpoints, but on both of my trips up Mount Mansfield I had bypassed Adam's Apple. So I returned Mount Mansfield in June 2003 to do Adam's Apple (Lamoille County) and revisit the Chin (Chittended County), see the trip report. In late November of that year I iked up Gillespie Peak, the highpoint of Windsor County.

In June 2004 I arranged a county highpointing weekend (5th and 6th) with Audrey and Pat, a couple who are doing many of the New England 3,000 footers, and whose company I enjoy very much. As the planning advanced two regulars from the VFTT group, Little Bear and Cantdog, joined. A fun trip was had, and we bagged the highpoints of Caledonia, Orange and Essex counties. Only Grand Isle left!

On returning from that trip I posted a note to the CoHPers group saying that I was looking for company for Grand Isle, and next day Roy Wallen emailed me that he was in Boston and would be interested in doing it with me. So on Wednesday, June 9th, I completed my first state!
