Several years ago, while doing the New England 4,000 Footers, I got the four counties that have such peaks. Initially I thought that none of the other couny highpoints looked interesting, and none (except East Turner) is by any definition a "big mountain". But on more careful examination several of the smaller peaks seem to be interesting, if not as destinations, then as peaks to do on the road to somewhere else.
In the Fall of 2005 I finally started attempting some of these "smaller mountains" on a trip to Baxter State Park. On October 3rd I visited Whitten Hill (Sagahadock County) on the drive to BSP, and on the 7th I visited Frye Mountain (Waldo County) before hiking up Mount Megunticook (Knox County) later in the day. Bad weather forced me to drive up Cadillac Mountain rather than hike up it on the 8th, I plan to return and hike it properly before counting it.
