With the 2005 Highpointers Convention (or Konvention) approaching I thought that I would put up a page describing the various ways of reaching the summit of Mount Washington, the highpoint of New Hampshire.

Cog Railway

The Mount Washington Cog Railway was opened in 1869, and is still going strong! The round trip cog ride takes approximately three hours, including a 20 minute stop at the summit. That unfortunately does not allow for much time on the summit. Check their site for rates and schedule.

Auto Road

The Mount Washington Auto Road was opened in 1860, and is still open. You can either drive yourself (but please check the vehicle limitations) or take a guided coach tour. Guided tours allow you to spend 30 minutes on the summit (one hour for trips before 9:30 AM), which allows a quick picture plus a visit to the gift shop, but no time for exploration. Driving your own car allows you all the time you want. Many people drive up to the summit, then hike down to Lakes of the Clouds Hut by the Crawford Path. It is 1.5 miles each way, with an elevation gain of 1,300 feet on the way back to your car.

I have written a trip report on a hiker's perspective on doing Mt. Washington by the Auto Road.

Hiking

There are a great many possible routes to the summit of Mount Washington. I have described those most used by peakbaggers in the Mount Washington page of my Peakbagging in New England site, and at the end of that page I have written a section on choosing a route.

I have written a trip report describing one of the most popular routes up Mount Washington, the loop by the Ammonoosuc Ravine and Jewell Trails, as well as one on a strenuous but worthwhile (in good weather) route through the Great Gulf.
