Water Margin tells
the story of the rebellion of bold people who, faithful to the Emperor,
do not bear anymore the injustices of his administration. Confronted
to that situation the Chinese Empire has only one solution : repression.
That is why soldiers are so many in the novel. To guarantee the
Song
Jiang's execution or keep
in jail Li
Kui?... here comes the army.
To defend a prefecture besieged by the outlaws... here come generals
and thousands of men. To protect convoys loaded with gold or food...
soldiers will do it.
The army seems to be the only weapon of
corrupted ministers and unjust civil servants. But the code of honour
of soldiers is nearest from the outlaws'one and a general loyally
defeated has no choice but to put his life into his victor's hands.
That explains how, battles after battles, many soldiers will
join the LiangShan Po gang and thus reinforce the strengths of Song
Jiang's dispensers of justice!
